Frequently Asked Questions

Are .45 Colt and .45 Long Colt the Same?

Yes, .45 Colt and .45 Long Colt refer to the same cartridge. The “long” in “Long Colt” came about in the mid-1870s to differentiate it from the shorter .45 S&W, which the U.S. Army adopted in some cavalry revolvers.

However, the .45 Long Colt and .45 ACP are not the same. While there may not be such a thing as a .45 “Short Colt,” .45 ACP rounds are noticeably shorter than .45 Colt — and more importantly, they are rimless, unlike the rimmed .45 Long Colt.

Is .45 Long Colt Good for Bear Defense?

The right .45 Long Colt ammo is capable of taking down big game, including black bears. Some loadings even pack a big enough punch to handle a grizzly with the right shot placement. If you’re looking for bear defense ammo, look for heavier, +P rounds, as lighter, lower-pressure .45 Long Colt hunting ammo may not be sufficient.

When most people think of .45 Long Colt self-defense ammo, they’re thinking of defense against humans, not bears. These options use too small a bullet to take down a large bear, but as always, shot placement is everything.

Can You Hunt Deer With .45 Long Colt?

The .45 Long Colt can be a great deer cartridge, provided you pick up the right .45 LC hunting ammo. Some states ban deer hunting with conventional rifles, leaving straight-walled cartridges as a natural choice within these restrictions, so the .45 Long Colt is particularly valuable as a deer caliber in these areas.

The best. 45 Long Colt ammo for deer hunting will feature an expanding tip, like a jacketed hollow point. Look for reliable, clean-burning powders, too, to ensure a safe, accurate shot.

Can You Shoot .45 ACP out of a .45 Long Colt?

No, you cannot fire .45 ACP ammo from a firearm chambered in .45 Long Colt. There are some noticeable differences between .45 Long Colt ammo vs. .45 ACP, most notably that the former is rimmed while the latter is rimless.

The .45 ACP, also called “.45 Auto,” is designed for use in semi-automatic pistols and is considerably shorter.  While the .45 Long Colt has a near-identical bullet diameter, it’s made for revolvers and lever-action rifles, so it will not cycle properly in a semi-auto. The same is true in reverse. You can’t shoot .45 LC from a firearm made for .45 ACP.

Can You Shoot .45-70 in a .45 Long Colt?

No, you can’t safely shoot .45-70 Government ammo in a .45 LC firearm. While both are rimmed, straight-walled cartridges, there are some important differences in .45-70 ammo vs. .45 Long Colt to consider.

The .45-70 Govt is a longer, thicker cartridge, so it will not fit in a chamber made for the smaller .45 Long Colt. Similarly, you can’t fire .45 LC out of something chambered in .45-70, as the excess clearance could cause safety problems.
