CCI® (Cascade Cartridges, Inc.) Ammunition was founded in 1951 by Richard "Dick" Speer (1915-1994), a machinist at Boeing’s Seattle plant when he realized that there was a vast amount of cash to be made in the ammo reloading business. After two name changes, Speer and his business partner, Arvid Nelson, settled on the name Cascade Cartridges, Inc., better known as CCI today.

Although Speer's case-making process was sound, the quality of the raw material was not. In the years after WWII, most stocks of cartridge brass had been depleted for the war effort. Component primers for reloaders were in short supply. Some war surplus primers were available in small quantities, but it just wasn’t enough. To counter the supply deficit and remain afloat in times of poor-quality materials, CCI began manufacturing primers. Originally intended to deliver primers to hobby reloaders, CCI's first shipment of primers was to fulfill a military contract using the chlorate FA-70 formula, before turning to non-corrosive, non-mercuric formulas for sporting cartridges. Eventually, CCI began manufacturing ammunition again, developing the world’s first mini-mag rimfire cartridge in 1963, and the Stinger, a popular, high-velocity .22 LR cartridge, developed in 1975.

Today, CCI is headquartered in Lewiston, Idaho under the Vista Outdoors® umbrella corporation, manufacturing a variety of popular rimfire and centerfire handgun cartridges and components, favored by civilian and professional shooters and reloaders worldwide.
