Are 10mm and .40 S&w the Same​?

While 10mm and .40 S&W are similar cartridges, they are not the same. Smith & Wesson’s Paul Lieberman designed the .40 S&W cartridge to be a shorter alternative to 10mm to offer similar ballistics while fitting in smaller handguns.

Can You Shoot .40 S&W in a 10mm?

It is possible to fire .40 S&W from a firearm chambered in 10mm, as the cartridges have the same diameter. However, this does not mean you should shoot 40 S&W out of your 10mm.

Because .40 S&W is a shorter cartridge, it will leave more exposed chamber space, increasing the risk of fouling. This mismatch can also cause problems with accuracy and extraction. As in all cases, it’s best to load your firearm with the caliber it was designed for.

Is .40 S&W Better than 9mm?

Whether the .40 S&W is better than 9mm depends on what you’re using it for. As a larger round, the .40 S&W packs a bigger punch, so it may be better in a pinch or for defending yourself against predators while out in nature.

On the other hand, you won’t find a handgun cartridge more widely available than 9mm. If you’re looking to stock up or spend long hours on the range, 9mm will be your best bet. 

Is .40 S&W Good for Bear Defense?

The right .40 S&W round will certainly provide better bear protection than 9mm, but it may still be too small to take down a larger bear, especially a grizzly. If you don’t have another firearm to bring with you on the trail, though, deep-penetrating, flat-nose .40 cal ammo will be more reliable against bears and other predators than the hollow points you’d normally use for self-defense.

Can You Hunt Deer With a .40 S&W?

You can kill a deer with .40 S&W bullets, but generally speaking, you should use a larger caliber to ensure a quick, ethical kill. Ammunition like Hornady Handgun Hunter .40 S&W Ammo makes hunting with this cartridge easier, but it’s better for small game and varmints than deer.
