Are 10mm and 10mm Auto the Same?

Yes, the 10mm and 10mm Auto are the same cartridge. The “auto” simply refers to the fact that it’s designed for use in semi-automatic handguns, but this designation isn’t strictly necessary, as there is no rimmed variation of the 10mm.

Is 10mm Bigger Than .45?

No, the 10mm is a slightly smaller cartridge than the .45 ACP, both in terms of its bullet and case. While 10mm does have a longer case, its overall length, bullet diameter, and case diameter all fall short of the .45’s specs. 

That said, bigger doesn’t always mean more powerful, and 10mm ammo offers greater power and penetration than .45 ACP, thanks to higher pressure and exit velocity.

Is 10mm Good for Self-Defense?

The 10mm is an excellent self-defense cartridge. It was originally designed as a defensive caliber, and it grew popular after the infamous 1986 FBI Miami Shootout, when the FBI decided its 9mm ammo didn’t deliver the stopping power agents needed.

It is worth noting that 10mm ammunition produces more recoil than the more popular 9mm, and it will penetrate further. However, it’s also remarkably versatile, so it’s a great choice if you prefer to carry a handgun and sub-gun in the same caliber, and using the right 10mm hollow point ammo will prevent overpenetration.

Can 10mm Stop a Bear?

The right 10mm ammo with proper shot placement can pack a big enough punch to stop a bear. If you plan on using the caliber for bear defense, avoid the 10mm hollow point ammo you might normally use and opt for hard-cast or flat-nose rounds.

Many hunters recommend a larger caliber or bear spray instead, but push come to shove, 10mm can get the job done. You can even find specific 10mm bear ammo, like Hornady Backcountry Defense 10mm Auto or Liberty Ammunition Bear Country 10mm Auto ammo.

Can You Shoot 10mm Out of a .40 S&W?

While the 10mm and .40 S&W are very similarly sized cartridges, you cannot safely fire 10mm ammo from a handgun chambered in .40 S&W. The .40 S&W was designed as a shorter 10mm variant, and a shorter case means less capacity, resulting in lower pressure. Consequently, 10mm rounds may be too long to cycle properly in a .40 S&W, and even if they do, they may generate more pressure than the chamber was designed for.
