Is .38 Special the Same as .38 Super?

No, the .38 Special and .38 Super are different cartridges. The main difference here is that .38 Special ammo is designed for use in revolvers and lever-action rifles, whereas .38 Super is intended for semi-automatic handguns.

The .38 Special and .38 Super have similarly sized bullets, but the latter has a much shorter case length and generates considerably higher chamber pressure. That difference in pressure means you should never attempt to fire .38 Super ammo out of a firearm chambered for .38 Special. The .38 Special is also a rimmed cartridge, so its case head is larger than the case’s base, unlike semi-auto cartridges like .38 Super, which are rimless and have the same diameter throughout the length of the case.

What Caliber is .38 Special?

Despite their name, .38 Special rounds are actually .36 caliber. It has a .357-inch diameter bullet, but it owes the “38” in its name to its predecessors.

The .38 Special was designed to replace the .38 Long Colt, which replaced the .38 Short Colt. This older round had a heeled bullet, which, unlike most modern rounds, has the same diameter as the case at its thickest point. When the .38 LC and, later, .38 Special emerged, they abandoned this practice, using a .357-inch bullet in a .38-inch case, but kept the old naming convention.

The “+P” you’ll see on options like Hornady Critical Defense .38 Special +P or CCI Blazer .38 Special +P ammo stands for “plus pressure.” This designation means that particular load will produce a higher internal pressure than standard loadings. More pressure means higher velocity and, in turn, more energy when it hits its target. This ammo is typically used in very short-barreled defensive revolvers, where the extra pressure makes up for lost velocity from the shorter barrel.

Can You Shoot .38 Special in a .357 Magnum?

You can load and shoot .38 Special ammo out of a handgun chambered for .357 Magnum, as these cartridges have the same case diameter, but the inverse is not true. You cannot safely fire .357 Magnum ammo out of a .38 Special, as the .357 Magnum has a longer case and much higher chamber pressure.
