Kel-Tec SUB2000 Gen3 Carbine: A New Twist

Fresh for 2024 is an upgraded Kel-Tec favorite, the SUB2000 Gen3 carbine. This new version of the Sub2000 pistol carbine comes with a surprising twist – the twist-and-fold motion in the patent-pending rotating forend.

The semi-automatic carbine in 9mm keeps the same idea as its predecessors, folding up to be stored in small areas with the unique twist of the forend. With the new design, no longer will users have to take off the optic to store the weapon, instead, they can install whatever optics they want and leave it. Kel-Tec refers to this as the “put-it-on and leave-it-on” feature. The fold happens with a simple one-handed movement and features a positive locking system to keep the optic zeroed and ready to go.

When folded, the Gen3 sits slightly over 16 inches long, with a full unfolded length of just over 30 inches. It also features an adjustable stock, like other models, and according to Kel-Tec, it is easy to field strip when needed. The carbine uses a straight blow-back system making it easy to use and maintain while keeping it reliable, like the previous SUB2000 models. With a 16-inch barrel, the Kel-Tec SUB2000 Gen3 keeps the velocity with power downrange and the accuracy to get the job done with the pistol caliber rounds out of the box.

The Gen3 keeps modularity with loads of M-LOK accessory compatibility along with Picatinny rails on the top and bottom of the rail. Essentially, the carbine has enough M-LOK space for plenty of gadgets, and then some. The carbine also features an ambidextrous bolt hold-open, a redesigned operating handle, and an aluminum trigger with a 5 lb. pull weight.

But what about the previous models’ compatibility with Glock mags? You guessed it. Kel-Tec kept that with the Gen3 model, meaning you can use it with your favorite 9mm Glock G17 and G19 pistol magazines if you so desire. At just over four pounds unloaded, the new Gen3 SUB2000 carbine fits in small spaces and is a great choice for a vehicle weapon or even a backpack according to the company. The SUB2000 Gen3 carbine is out now and has an MSRP of $499.

Patti Miller is one of the most awesome females in the tactical/firearm (or any) industry. Imagine a tall, hawt, dangerous Laura Ingalls Wilder type with cool hair and a suppressed blaster and you'll be getting the idea. What's interesting is that in addition to being a willing brawler and intrepid adventuress, she's also an Ent/Ogier level gardener and a truly badass baker.
