What Is 124-Grain Ammo?

Grain refers to a bullet’s weight, with one grain equaling 1/7000th of a pound, so 124gr ammo uses bullets weighing 124 grains, or about 0.28 ounces.

124 grains is on the heavier side for 9mm ammo, but you can find 147gr 9mm ammo, too. In general, a heavier bullet means lower velocity but greater kinetic energy, but several other factors can impact ballistic performance, so it’s not always so cut-and-dry. As is the case with other ammo types,  9mm 124-grain FMJ ammunition will penetrate further than 9mm 124-grain hollow point bullets, and differences in loading will also affect velocity and energy. 

What Is the Difference Between 115-Grain and 124-Grain?

124gr ammo is heavier than 115gr, which comes with some benefits and tradeoffs. Shooting 124-grain ammunition can mean your shots hit your target with more energy, but it will also mean less velocity and, as a result, greater bullet drop. These differences become more evident at longer ranges but may not be all that noticeable at short range.

Does 124-Grain Have More or Less Recoil than 115-Grain​?

Many shooters may not notice a difference between 124gr and 115gr ammunition, as 9 grains is not a big difference in weight. However, those who are particularly recoil-sensitive or shoot enough to notice small discrepancies may find that 124-grain rounds are easier to control than 115.

Because 115gr bullets are slightly smaller, they leave more room in the cartridge for powder, resulting in snappier recoil. Heavier 124gr rounds may feel like more of a push, which you may find easier to manage.

Is 124-Grain 9mm Good for Self-Defense?

No, 124-grain 9mm ammunition is not inherently subsonic. While some companies do manufacture subsonic 9mm 124gr FMJ ammo, most projectiles of this weight will travel fast enough to break the sound barrier. If you want subsonic 9mm ammo, you’ll typically have to move up to 147 grain.
