About the Springfield M14
The Springfield Armory® M14 is a select-fire, gas-operated combat service rifle, fielded by the US Military from 1959 to 1970 after the revered M1 Garand was retired from service at the end of the Korean War. The M14 was developed to serve as a multi-role rifle, effectively replacing a multitude of service weapons, including the M1 Garand, the M3 submachine gun, the M1 Carbine, and the M1918 Browning automatic rifle (BAR) to simplify the logistical requirements of the troops by limiting the types of ammunition and parts needed to be supplied. However, the M14 was thought to be inferior to many of the firearms it was designed to replace as the cartridge was too powerful for the submachine gun role and the weapon was simply too light to serve as a light machine gun replacement for the M1918 BAR. The 7.62×51mm NATO cartridge was valued for its excellent accuracy at extended ranges; however, the overwhelming power became uncontrollable in fully automatic fire, forcing most GIs to set their M14s semi-automatic fire settings to avoid wasting ammunition in combat. Further, the M14 proved to be an unreliable challenge in the thick brush of Vietnam due to its length and weight, and the traditional wood stocks tended to swell and expand in the heavy moisture of the jungle, which essentially ruined any chance at accuracy. Fiberglass stocks were produced to resolve this problem, but the rifle was discontinued before the fiberglass stocks could be distributed for field use.
