Frequently Asked Questions

Is Barnes Ammo Good?

Barnes has earned a reputation for innovation and performance over its 90-plus-year history. While it’s most famous for its hunting ammo, its defensive and target ammunition carry the same legacy of accuracy and reliability.

Where is Barnes Ammo Made?

While founder Fred Barnes originally made and sold bullets out of his Bayfield, Colorado, basement, Barnes has manufactured all of its ammunition at its Mona, Utah, production facility since moving to Utah in the mid-70s.

Are Barnes Bullets Lead-Free?

Some of Barnes’ rifle and handgun ammo uses a lead core, but the brand is arguably most famous for its lineup of lead-free bullets. In 1989, Barnes released the X bullet — its first all-copper round. Since then, lead-free ammo has become a core part of its brand identity.

Barnes makes two general types of lead-free bullets. The first and most popular is its all-copper lineup, which includes the TSX, TTSX, and LRX lines. You can also get solid brass ammo from the manufacturer if you prefer.

In either case, Barnes’ lead-free bullets are a solid option in areas where lead faces legal restrictions. Ammo regulations vary between states and cities, so always double-check yours before ordering anything.

What’s the Difference Between Barnes TSX, TTSX, and LRX Bullets?

Barnes TSX, TTSX, and LRX lines are all lead-free, solid copper bullets, but they have some important differences. In short, the TSX is the most basic of Barnes’ all-copper bullets, the TTSX offers greater long-range performance, and the LRX is the most advanced of the three.

The Barnes TSX bullet is essentially a modernized version of its original X bullet. It has the same all-copper construction that allows for 28% deeper penetration than lead-core rounds while using a grooved design to reduce fouling and chamber pressure.

TTSX bullets also use a grooved, solid copper design, but they have a polymer tip. This helps them retain velocity at longer ranges and makes them less affected by wind.

Barnes’ LRX range of ammunition takes things further through a longer, sleeker design and a larger tip. These bullets expand faster than the others for a quicker, cleaner kill and are the most accurate of the bunch. If you’re in the market for precision ammo, the LRX is a safe bet.
