Full metal jacket (FMJ) rounds are the way to go, as they’ll fly straight and can easily penetrate targets. They’re also easier to manufacture, so they’re often cheaper. That makes a difference when you’re spending a long day at the range.

Keep in mind that some ranges restrict what ammo you can use. Many indoor facilities don’t allow Green Tip 5.56 rounds because they wear down their targets and backstops. So, check your local range’s rules before stocking up.

What’s the Difference Between Range Ammo and Defensive Ammo?

The biggest differentiator between target and self-defense ammo is the projectile. FMJ is the go-to for range rounds, but defensive ammunition usually uses hollow points.

Hollow points are more expensive than range ammo, which isn’t practical for long practice sessions. FMJ rounds are cheap but not great for self-defense because they tend to penetrate fully, which could harm innocent bystanders and impact stopping power.

Similarly, you may want to use lighter rounds at the range than what you carry for self-defense. A lighter bullet is less expensive, so you can fling more downrange without breaking the bank.

Is Target Ammo Lethal?

Yes, range ammunition is lethal, and proper firearm safety is always essential, no matter what you’re firing. Just because an FMJ round doesn’t pack quite the same punch as a hollow point doesn’t mean it’s safe.
