Frequently Asked Questions

Who Owns Federal Ammunition?

Federal Ammunition is part of the Kinetic Group, which was bought by the Czechoslovak Group (CSG) in 2024. The Kinetic Group also covers other notable ammo brands like Remington, Speer, and CCI.

Is Federal Ammunition Good?

Federal Ammunition has established a reputation for quality among professional shooters and amateur hunters alike. Product lines like the Federal Syntech 9mm are regarded among the best to stockpile and shoot, thanks to their innovative design and proven reliability over the years.

That reliability makes its match-grade ammo an excellent choice when you need something that will perform to the highest of standards. It also means you can trust its defensive rounds in an emergency or use Federal’s hunting ammunition for a clear shot and clean kill.

Where is Federal Ammunition Made?

All Federal ammo is made at the brand’s Anoka, Minnesota factory. While the Czech CSG bought the brand in 2024, it remains committed to manufacturing here in the U.S.A. It’s the very same property Federal has been operating out of since its inception in 1922, though over that time, it’s grown to a 175-acre facility capable of serving modern America’s ammo needs.

What’s the Difference Between Federal HST and Federal Hydra-Shok?

Federal’s HST and Hydra-Shok lines are some of its most popular self-defense rounds, and while they’re similar, they have some important differences. In short, both HST and Hydra-Shok fill a similar defensive niche, but HST rounds provide greater penetration when shooting through barriers like clothing.

Federal Hydra-Shok ammo came out first, debuting in 1989 to meet the growing demand for jacketed hollow-point defensive rounds. HST followed up on this trend in 2002 with a slightly different design to meet stricter FBI standards.

Hydra-Shok rounds have a post in the middle of the bullet tip, while HST ammo uses a more standard hollow-point design. This change, plus a grooved jacket that promotes controlled expansion upon impact, gives the HST deeper penetration even when firing through clothes.

Is Federal HST 9mm Ammo Good for Self-Defense?

All of Federal’s 9mm ammunition delivers reliable performance, and the HST 9mm is no different. The HST’s innovative design, alongside Federal’s high quality standards, has made the round a favorite of law enforcement and casual shooters alike. It offers deeper penetration than Federal’s older Hydra-Shok line while maintaining the same reliability across any situation that the brand has become known for.
