Can You Use .223 Ammo in a 5.56 Rifle?

While the .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO appear almost identical to the naked eye, you shouldn’t fire one in a rifle chambered for the other. Despite their many similarities, there are slight differences that can pose safety issues to you and your firearm.

You can shoot .223 ammo out of a 5.56 safely, however, the 5.56 is designed to withstand higher pressures, and a 5.56 round’s slight size and shape discrepancies can create excess pressure in the chamber of a .223 rifle. While some shooters debate how much of a real-world difference this makes, it’s best to play it safe and stick to the ammo your firearm is designed for. 

What Ammo Does a Bolt-Action Rifle Use?

There is no specific type of ammo exclusive to bolt-action rifles, and ultimately, you should use whatever caliber your firearm is chambered for. However, there are some ammo types that are more common in bolt-actions.
