⊕Five Million New Gun Owners in the US, So Far

Gun News. According to the results from a National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) survey, 40 percent of firearm sales this year have been to first-time gun owners. That adds up to nearly 5 million. in just the first seven months of 2020. Also noteworthy, retailers report a 95 percent increase in firearm sales and a 139 percent increase in ammunition sales compared to the same time frame in 2019.

Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF Senior Vice President of General Counsel, said“This is a tectonic shift in the firearm and ammunition industry marketplace and complete transformation of today’s gun-owning community. These first-time buyers represent a group of people who, until now, were agnostic regarding firearm ownership. That’s rapidly changing, and these Americans are taking hold of their God-given right to keep and bear arms and protect themselves and their loved ones.”

Gun News NSSF Retailer Sales Survey 2020 5 million new gun owners.

More from NSSF:

Several factors are contributing to the sustained surge in firearm purchases. Sales spiked in March, with a record-setting 2.3 million NICS background checks conducted for a firearm sale, the same month the coronavirus pandemic struck. During this time, police warned response times would be tested while mayors and governors emptied prisons, including violent felons. Some of those were rearrested within days for committing another violent crime. After Memorial Day, protests turned to looting, riots and destruction, which continues today in several major metropolitan areas. Politically-charged calls to defund police also continue to spur sales.

This is also an election year and firearm sales typically rise during presidential election years. However, this year, Democratic candidates Joe Biden and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) are calling for stringent gun control measures, including forcible confiscation, banning entire classes of firearms from lawful possession, licensing schemes and repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which would expose the firearm industry to frivolous and harassing lawsuits.

Each month since March, NSSF-adjusted NICS background checks have set a record as the strongest ever recorded for that month.

⊕SHOT Show 2021

Geissele Automatics Donates 250,000 Face Masks to the Show

Gun News. As far as anyone knows, the NSSF SHOT Show 2021 is still on the calendar, but it’s going to be different this year (like everything else) with new health safety measures in place. This week, we heard that Geissele has offered its assistance to the success of the show by donating a quarter-million facemasks. The event is scheduled for January 19-22 at the Sands Expo Center with an expansion to Caesars Form, with over 2,100 exhibitors.

Geissele COO Joe Plunkett said, “With 2021 right around the corner, and given everything that’s going on, we were unsure if SHOT Show would even take place this year, We were very pleased to work with NSSF to donate these masks in an effort to help facilitate SHOT Show moving forward and keeping everyone safe. We will see you all in Vegas!”

Chris Dolnack, NSSF Senior Vice President and CMO said, “We have had incredible support from our industry manufacturers for the 2021 SHOT Show, but this donation from Geissele puts an exclamation point on it all. Sponsors big and small support the SHOT Show in many ways, and we couldn’t do it without them. We are greatly appreciative of this tremendous support from Geissele and the generosity of its owners and staff—and we can’t wait to see everyone in Vegas in January.”

⊕Glock

Slimline GLOCK 43X and GLOCK 48 Available in Modular Optic System (MOS) Configuration

Gun News. Last year Glock introduced the G43X and the G48 with compact Slimline frames and 10-round magazines. Now the Slimline models are available optics-ready with MOS cutout and slim Glock mounting rail system.

Gun News: Slimline GLOCK 43X and GLOCK 48 Available in Modular Optic System (MOS) Configuration

From Glock:

With a non-standard MOS footprint, the Slimline MOS models require specific mico-reflex optics such as the Shield RMSc.

Reflex optics (MOS) allow you to look through the reticle and focus on the target and alignment of the dot. The slim design allows the optical sight to be closer to the shooter’s line of sight and eliminates the need for high, back-up sights by allowing visibility of the standard GLOCK sights through the lens of the compact optic. With improved accuracy, quicker target acquisition and versatility, MOS pistols have become increasingly more popular for home and self-defense and are an ideal options for confined space operations.

A non-standard accessory rail allows for a light to be attached with close alignment to the firearm’s bore with positioning in front of the trigger guard which allows the operator to maintain a two-handed grip.

“Engineered with the GLOCK perfection promise, the two new models are the first Slimline pistols to offer an MOS option and are ideal for shooters everywhere,” said Shelby Lasater, GLOCK, Inc. Director of Marketing. “The versatility of the Slimline MOS models give them the adaptability and ease of use for concealed carry, target shooting, law enforcement, and competition which make them a new favorite.”

Both new models incorporate Gen5 Technologies such as the nDLC finish for extreme durability, a reversible magazine catch, and the match-grade, GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB) for increased accuracy.

⊕Gun Sales Continue to Soar

Gun News. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic started back in March, growing numbers of Americans have been purchasing firearms and ammunition for self-defense purposes during these unsettled times.

The gun-buying trend hasn’t stopped apparently, as July turned out to be the third-highest month on record for firearm background checks in the U.S. The numbers are down 300,000 compared to June, but it’s still a 79.2% increase compared to July of 2019. With 5 months left in 2020, firearm background checks are only 24% behind the total conducted in 2019. Illinois, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, and California continue to be the states with the most background checks for sale, transfer, or licensing of firearms.

That means there are a heck of a lot of new gun owners in our ranks. Whether you’re new to the firearm world, or a veteran, check out the link below to see The Mag Life’s collection of articles and information that’ll be useful to you. Also, California residents, if you are confused about the ruling over large-capacity magazines that was passed down last week, check out the link below.

⊕Primary Arms Optics

Releases SLx 1-6x24mm SFP Rifle Scope — It’s Metric Based

Gun News. Primary Arms Optics, known for it’s ACSS reticles developed by Dimitri Mikroulis, just made their rifle scopes accessible to a wider audience by releasing this scope. It’s metric!

As the company describes it,

This is the first variable optic to feature the new metric-based ACSS reticle, which provides the user with an intuitive holdover system with built-in ranging and wind-holds. Whether you’re engaging from point-blank to 800 meters, this optic will provide you the tools necessary to succeed at a price affordable to most budgets.

Gun News - Primary Arms SLx 1-6x24mm SFP Metric rifle scope

Dimitri Mikroulis, creator of the ACSS reticle system, describes its benefits with clarity: “The ACSS Aurora 5.56 M is an advanced meter-based version of the famed ACSS reticle. ACSS Aurora 5.56 M enhances hit ratio with improved range estimation, wind holds, movement leads and a highly calibrated BDC for the 5.56 cartridge.”

More from PA:

The ACSS Aurora reticle is our very first foray into meter-based ranging and fire solutions. The feature-rich and intuitive reticle design is uncluttered, designed to communicate vital information in an efficient manner to not only increase first-hit probability but drastically reduce the time necessary to reach a firing solution to get that hit. From 300m and in, the illuminated chevron aiming point provides wicked-quick snap shooting capability and both-eyes open engagement, so you never lose peripheral vision. The outer tips of the chevron pull double duty as leads for targets moving 3.1mph perpendicular to the shooter. For targets moving a bit faster, the two lead dots on either side of the chevron are leads for a target hustling along at 8.6mph. Aurora even compensates for mounted targets up to 40mph!

We knew our flagship Gen II 1-6×24 would be a tough act to follow, so we worked hard to make incremental but real improvements. The Gen III is 18mm shorter (10.04in long), weighs 1.88 ounces less (16.9 oz. total), and has an additional 10 MOA of internal adjustment compared to the older model.

Features

  • Second Focal Plane ACSS Aurora 5.56 Meter reticle
  • 50-meter bullet drop compensation gradients to 800m
  • Integrated moving target leads for speeds up to 40mph
  • Full value wind holds for 5mph – 10mph winds from 400m to 800m
  • Automatic target ranging and BDC
  • BDC and ranging accurate at highest magnification setting
  • 1-6x total magnification range
  • Red illuminated with 11 brightness settings
  • Includes CR2032 battery
  • Single piece 6063 aluminum construction
  • Water and fog proof
  • More compact than older models
  • Hardcoat anodized matte black
  • Lifetime warranty

⊕Griffin Armament

Announces New CAM-LOK Universal Suppressor Mounting System

Gun News. According to Griffin, users won’t have to field strip their suppressors on the range any longer with this new QD piston suppressor mounting system. The company is calling it a “universal” system, as in, it can accommodate any pistol mounted with a 3 Lug universal barrel adapter and notable pistol suppressors.

CAM-LOK universal suppressor mounting system from Griffin Armament.

From Griffin Armament:

The Griffin Armament CAM-LOK interface affords the user the ability to convert the suppressor to a much faster and more secure mounting solution on browning style action (tilt barrel) pistols vs it’s legacy technology, single piece, direct thread piston counterparts.  This system provides a rapid, secure attachment to the host pistol.  Direct thread single piece pistons have several negative attributes.  They do not accept tools, and are hand tightened to the host firearm. As a result of hand installation, they loosen when the piston system reciprocates under slide cycling during the firing sequence.  This vibration and inadvertent loosening of pistol silencers, requires end users to constantly check tighten pistol silencers.  This periodically causes users to have “bad range days” with unforeseen baffle strikes and end cap strikes.  These unfortunate events cause logistically burdensome work for consumers to communicate with service departments, ship products back and forth, and sometimes assume charges for repair for these issues.

No longer do users need to worry about their pistol suppressors loosening during use (as with traditional fixed direct thread pistons).  The CAM-LOK interface supports a 3/4″ socket wrench for installation with prevailing torque, and features a taper locking system, which encourages secure attachment, despite the piston still actuating for and aft during the firing sequence.  The piston can be attached / detached in any one of three, 120 degree positions, ensuring there are no “false positive” interfacing positions to slow deployment of the suppressor onto the host firearm.  Additionally, the manufacturing accuracy of the interface is held to Griffin Armament’s high quality standards for squareness, and concentricity, ensuring that each mounting position has similar and minimal POI shift influence. To support this, the mating pistons have all mating diameters and interfacing geometry qualified in a single operation, for tool quality accuracy and perfection.  A similar manufacturing theory was applied to the barrel adapter for maximum alignment accuracy.

Welcome back to GunMag Gun News 5×5 Friday.

Today’s a great day for gun owners in California because should be able to start buying “large capacity” mags again. ‘Bout time, eh?

Some interesting new firearms were released this week from Magnum Research and Krieghoff. Brownells announced a next-gen line of BRN-180 uppers, and SureFire has a new suppressor you’ll want to see. And then, Apex has a new trigger for the Hellcat.

But first, can you believe what just happened in California?

⊕California Large Capacity Magazine Ban Ruled Unconstitutional

Gun News. The Ninth Circuit of Appeals just ruled that the ban on magazines with a capacity of greater than 10-rounds violates the Second Amendment.

Here is what Circuit Judge Lee opined:

In the wake of heart-wrenching and highly publicized mass shootings, the state of California barred its citizens from owning so-called “large-capacity magazines” (LCMs) that hold more than ten rounds of ammunition. But even well-intentioned laws must pass constitutional muster. California’s near-categorical ban of LCMs strikes at the core of the Second Amendment — the right to armed self-defense. Armed self-defense is a fundamental right rooted in tradition and the text of the Second Amendment. Indeed, from pre-colonial times to today’s post-modern era, the right to defend hearth and home has remained paramount.

California’s law imposes a substantial burden on this right to self-defense. The ban makes it criminal for Californians to own magazines that come standard in Glocks, Berettas, and other handguns that are staples of self-defense. Its scope is so sweeping that half of all magazines in America are now unlawful to own in California. Even law-abiding citizens, regardless of their training and track record, must alter or turn over to the state any LCMs that they may have legally owned for years — or face up to a year in jail.

The state of California has latitude in enacting laws to curb the scourge of gun violence, and has done so by imposing waiting periods and many other limitations. But the Second Amendment limits the state’s ability to second guess a citizen’s choice of arms if it imposes a substantial burden on her right to self-defense. Many Californians may find solace in the security of a handgun equipped with an LCM: those who live in rural areas where the local sheriff may be miles away, law-abiding citizens trapped in high-crime areas, communities that distrust or depend less on law enforcement, and many more who rely on their firearms to protect themselves and their families. California’s almost blanket ban on LCMs goes too far in substantially burdening the people’s right to self-defense. We affirm the district court’s summary judgment and hold that California Penal Code section 32310’s ban on LCMs runs afoul of the Second Amendment.

Joby Goerges, Director of Manufacturing and Engineering with Magnum Research, stated that the Baby Eagle “..continues to be in high demand, and is very popular with fans. It is well known from appearances in popular movies, television shows, and video games. This gives the Baby Eagle a huge fan base, and in particular feeds big demand amongst younger shooters.” Like its big brother, the Desert Eagle, the Baby Eagle is an icon of both popular culture and the shooting community.

Gun News. Speaking of next-gen, SureFire just announced its next generation in 9mm suppressors, the SF RYDER 9-Ti2. The company advertises it as having a thicker fluted titanium outer tube than its predecessor the SF RYDER 9-Ti, for increased rigidity and suppressor-to-barrel concentricity, minimizing even further the POI shift. On the inside, SureFire’s heat-treated, U.S. mill-certified stainless-steel baffles feature a new interface, and the SF RYDER 9-Ti2’s proprietary booster assembly is revised for even more precise alignment. The booster’s anti-friction coating also reduces carbon buildup for consistent high performance, round after round.

Gun News: SureFire SF RYDER 9-Ti2 9mm suppressors

From SureFire:

Weighing a mere 10.7 ounces, the SF RYDER 9-Ti2 is one of the lightest suppressors in its class, and it advances SureFire’s proven formula for an ultra-quiet, low-profile 9mm suppressor. Its patented design reduces sound by 28 dB at the shooter’s ear when compared to an unsuppressed weapon, helping to preserve hearing and reduce environmental noise at the range or in the field. It’s also an ideal tool for introducing beginners to pistol shooting. Reduced noise allows for easier communication between shooter and instructor, and it allows the shooter to focus on technique with less intimidation. The SF RYDER 9-Ti2 offers improved accuracy and faster follow-up shots. Regardless of your experience level, the SF RYDER 9-Ti2 will make your shooting experience more enjoyable by significantly reducing sound while delivering minimal and consistent point-of-aim, point-of-impact shift.

Cleaning and maintaining the SF RYDER 9-Ti2 is a snap. Its baffles are indexed and numbered for easy assembly every time. You simply can’t put it together wrong, and every SF RYDER suppressor even includes a tool for easy takedown and assembly. A numerical indexing system on the rear of the suppressor also assures repeatable mounting every time, ensuring zero retention. SureFire’s precision single-point cut threads provide quick, secure attachment to ½ x 28 or M13.5 x 1 LH threaded barrels (depending on the model). Featuring an abrasion-resistant, high-temperature Cerakote finish and available in two colors, the SF RYDER 9-Ti2 is proudly made in the U.S.A.

⊕August is National Shooting Sports Month

Gun News. Back in 2016, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) established August as National Shooting Sports Month. It originally began as an attraction for new customers, but has since become an annual celebration among gun owners, retailers, and ranges. Events are planned all across the U.S. with classes, demonstrations, and shooting matches. This year, the NSSF is encouraging shooters to participate in the +One Challenge by taking a new shooter to the range, further growing the shooting sports community.

As the NSSF says, “Whether you’re a seasoned shooter, first-time gun owner or have never stepped foot on a range, National Shooting Sports Month is for you! Find local events in your area and take someone shooting, learn something new or simply share your love for everything firearms with others.”

Launches MK17 — Newest 9mm with Radial Delayed Blowback

Gun News. CMMG just announced it’s new short-shooting pistol caliber AR that eats Sig Sauer P320/M17 magazines.

Gun News - CMMG MK17 9mm

Gun News. CMMG just announced it’s new short-shooting pistol caliber AR that eats Sig Sauer P320/M17 magazines.

Gun News: CMMG MK17 Banshee key features.

From CMMG:

The addition of the Mk17, chambered in 9mm, shows CMMG’s commitment to never settle. Accepting Sig Sauer M17/P320 magazines, the Mk17 is available in both BANSHEE and RESOLUTE configurations. Pair the BANSHEE or RESOLUTE with your existing M17/P320 and you have the convenience of magazine interchangeability.

Staying true to its innovative and industry-leading values, CMMG brings to market the Mk17 on the heels of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps adoption of the Sig Sauer M17/M18 service pistols. In November of 2019, Sig Sauer delivered its 100,000th M17/M18 handgun to the U.S. military and the number continues to rise. Those familiar with the platform now have a personal defense firearm (PDW) at their disposal. As hundreds of thousands of service members adopt a new pistol platform over the next 20-30 years, the CMMG Mk17 will be a great pairing to add to their arsenal.

Ashley covered the MK17 earlier this week, so be sure to check it out.

Introduces The Hydra QE, a Multi-Caliber PCP Rifle

Gun News. With a single thumb screw, users will be able to trade calibers thanks to the Hatsan Versi-Cal Technology, without even removing a scope, if one is already mounted. As the company explains it, a  knurled screw located at the rear of the receiver locks the upper module onto the lower receiver, allowing caliber changes in just a few seconds.

As for the magazine, this rifle uses Hatsan’s S/Roto-Index magazine system, which is a caliber-specific self-indexing rotary magazine. Also, each module has Hatsan’s QuietEnergy shrouded barrel that Hatsan says reduces downrange noise by up to 50%.
