SHOT 2024: Smith & Wesson Goes Lever Action with the 1854

Smith & Wesson is starting off 2024 by getting into the world of lever-action rifles. The respected gun manufacturer launched their new levers with perfect timing to commemorate the original 1854 Volcanic lever action patent. Accordingly, the new Smith & Wesson 1854 line celebrates the innovation of the company’s founders by bringing these new guns to market for the first time. You could say these rifles were 170 years in the making.

Smith & Wesson Brands, Inc. is pleased to announce its first-ever series of lever action rifles, the Smith & Wesson Model 1854 Series. In 1854, founders Horace Smith & Daniel Wesson patented their first lever gun, and today the modern version is being released to the market. The Model 1854 honors that historic milestone. The classic American lever gun is reborn in this line of guns that is the first to incorporate the feel of Smith & Wesson’s large-frame revolvers including their smooth actions and stellar craftsmanship.

Smith & Wesson Model 1854

The Smith & Wesson Model 1854 rifle is built with a 19.25-inch barrel threaded in 11/16-24 at the muzzle. The 1854 is chambered in .44 Remington Magnum with a 9+1 capacity. The rifle has the classic American lever gun aesthetic while incorporating modern enhancements to fulfill the needs of serious shooters. The gun has a synthetic black and stainless-steel finish across the stock, receiver, forend, and barrel. Features include M-LOK slots in the forend for easy addition of aftermarket accessories, a 4.75-inch Picatinny rail over the receiver for mounting optics, a large loop lever for operation even while wearing gloves, and a flat-face trigger. The Model 1854 has a side loading gate and includes a removable mag tube for easy unloading.

Model 1854 Limited Edition

The Model 1854 Limited Edition shares the same features as the standard 1854. However, it boasts a high-grade satin walnut finish on the stock and forend versus a synthetic stock and forend. Furthermore, the polished black PVD receiver and barrel finish beautifully contrast with the finished walnut. The rifle’s overall length is 36 inches. In addition, the standard XS Sights’ adjustable ghost ring rear sight and gold bead front provide rapid target acquisition.

Mark Smith, President & CEO, remarked on the new levers:

Today, as we proudly unveil the Model 1854 Series, we embark on a journey that pays homage to this timeless design. Meticulously crafted, these rifles fuse the classic craftsmanship of the iconic lever-action with modern engineering to deliver a platform built on reliability and performance. Our new Model 1854 rifles are a nod to tradition and a testament to Smith & Wesson’s legacy as an American firearms manufacturer.

MSRP for the Smith & Wesson Model 1854 is set at $1,279 for the standard model and $3,499 for the Limited Edition rifle.
