New from Kel-Tec: The R50 Defender Rifle Kit

As the world of pistols chambered in the hot 5.7×28 cartridge expands, rifles chambered in the same are sure to follow suit. But sometimes, conversion kits and other out-of-the-box solutions are more practical than reinventing the wheel with a new firearm platform. No stranger to pushing the envelope with innovative firearms and kits, Kel-Tec Firearms of Cocoa, Florida has released the R50 Defender rifle kit to convert your existing P50 pistol into an SBR (with NFA approval).

The R50 Defender rifle kit does not change the mechanical function of the P50 pistol. It simply gives it a folding stock that keeps the pistol’s footprint small, while giving you the option to shoot it as easily as a rifle. [Kel-Tec Firearms]
Quick Specs:

  • Model: R50 Defender Kit
  • Caliber: 5.7x28mm FN
  • Capacity: 50 rounds
  • Barrel Length: 9.6 inch
  • Overall Length: 25.2 inch
  • Muzzle: 1/2×28-inch threaded
  • Weight: 5.3 lbs.

The P50 is Kel-Tec’s flagship 5.7 pistol. It comes with a 9.6-inch barrel, which allows you to get the most out of the 5.7x28mm cartridge without being onerously long. It uses 50-round FN P90 magazines for maximum firepower out of a small package. But that package might just be too small and too much fun to wield like a handgun. Now Keltec is offering the R50 Defender rifle kit to convert your existing P90 pistol into a short-barreled rifle (SBR) after the necessary NFA paperwork has been filed and approved.

The R50 Defender is the SBR successor to the standard R50, which uses a 16-inch carbine-length barrel and a collapsable stock. The R50 Defender kit comes with the same stock setup to mount onto the pistol, giving you a third point of contact when you are shooting. But when collapsed, the R50 Defender is no less compact. If you have a P50 but want to make it a bit more practical, consider the R50 Defender rifle kit to make it happen.
