Top 5 Home Defense Firearms for 2024

When it comes to protecting your home and loved ones, choosing the right firearm is a big decision. The ideal home defense weapon should be reliable, easy to use, and effective at stopping a threat. Here, I’ve compiled a list of the top five home defense firearms for 2024, each with its unique advantages. These guns are not new to 2024 but remain among the best choices this year. I didn’t put this list in a certain order, just five of my favorites for your consideration.

1. Glock 19

The Glock 19 is a tried-and-true favorite among law enforcement, military, and civilian shooters. Known for its reliability and ease of use, it is a solid choice for home defense. Glock took the gun world by storm with its somewhat ugly but impressively reliable handguns. The Gen 5 models look much better than the older versions, but it’s not about the looks, is it?

One of the standout features of the Glock 19 is its simplicity. The firearm operates on a “safe action” system, meaning there is no external safety to fumble with under stress. Just point and shoot. It has a 15+1 capacity, which is standard for a gun this size. Because of its widespread popularity, the aftermarket support is extensive. You can easily find accessories like night sights, extended magazines, and weapon lights to customize your setup.

Maintenance is straightforward with the Glock 19. It disassembles quickly and is incredibly durable, requiring minimal upkeep to keep it running smoothly. Its reputation for going “bang” every time you pull the trigger makes it a top contender for home defense. In a high-stress scenario, you want a firearm that is dependable, and the Glock 19 fits the bill perfectly.

2. B&T GHM9

The B&T GHM9 is a compact, lightweight pistol-caliber carbine that has gained popularity for its accuracy and versatility. Designed by the Swiss manufacturer B&T (Brügger & Thomet), the GHM9 offers a reliable and user-friendly option for home defense.

Some versions of the B&T are compatible with Glock mags, which is a great feature. I have an older version that runs on B&T mags, but I don’t mind. They have proven to be reliable as well. The GHM9 features a blowback-operated system that ensures reliable performance and minimal recoil, making it easier to stay on target during rapid fire.

The GHM9’s modular design allows for easy customization. You can add optics, lights, and other accessories to tailor the firearm to your specific needs. I have a folding pistol brace that is easy to put on and take off. When using the arm brace, you have much more control and accuracy than a handgun, but it’s still compact. This makes it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, a crucial consideration for home defense scenarios.

If you’re looking for a versatile and reliable firearm that bridges the gap between a handgun and a rifle, the B&T GHM9 is an excellent choice for defending your home.

3. Daniel Defense DDM4 RIII

For those who prefer a rifle for home defense, the Daniel Defense DDM4 RIII is a top-tier option. This AR-15-style rifle is renowned for its quality, reliability, and performance. Chambered in 5.56mm, the DDM4 RIII offers the power and accuracy needed to neutralize threats effectively. This is a great option for rural areas where longer-distance incidents are more likely.

One of the key features of the DDM4 RIII is its lightweight construction. Made from high-quality materials, the rifle is easy to handle and maneuver, even in confined spaces. The rifle’s free-floating handguard and cold hammer-forged barrel enhance accuracy and durability. It has ambidextrous controls, which make it user-friendly for both left and right-handed shooters.

The DDM4 RIII also comes equipped with Daniel Defense’s signature furniture, including a comfortable stock and ergonomic grip. These features ensure that the rifle is comfortable to shoot, even during extended use. The rifle’s 14.5-inch barrel with a pin & welled muzzle device keeps the gun as short as legally possible.

When it comes to performance, the DDM4 RIII is second to none. It delivers consistent accuracy and reliability, making it a dependable choice for home defense. I’ve put thousands of rounds through mine, and it continues to shoot like a dream. Whether you’re dealing with a single intruder or multiple threats, the DDM4 RIII’s superior performance will give you the confidence and capability to protect your home effectively.

4. 1911 in .45 ACP

The .45 1911 is a classic firearm that has stood the test of time. I’m partial to my Bull Armory 1911, but there are a ton of 1911 options out there. Known for its ability to stop threats, the 1911 is a favored choice among many shooters for home defense. Chambered in .45 ACP, this pistol is iconic for a reason. It has a natural point of aim and is extremely reliable.

One of the 1911’s defining characteristics is its single-action trigger. This design allows for a crisp, clean trigger pull, which enhances accuracy. While the 1911’s magazine capacity is typically lower than that of more modern designs, its .45 ACP round more than makes up for it with superior stopping power. The 1911 is available in a variety of configurations, from full-size models to more compact versions, allowing you to choose the best fit for your needs.

The 1911’s all-metal construction gives it a solid, substantial feel, and its inherent accuracy is one of the reasons it remains popular today. Customization options for the 1911 are nearly limitless. From different grip styles to upgraded sights and finishes, you can personalize your 1911 to suit your preferences.

Despite its age, the 1911 is still a relevant and effective tool for home defense. Its combination of power, precision, and reliability makes it a great option. If you’re a fan of classic firearms with proven track records, the .45 1911 is an excellent choice for protecting your home.

5.  12 Gauge Shotguns

Okay, when it comes to shotguns, I couldn’t make up my mind, so I’m just going to mention several instead of one. Shotguns are unique because of their raw stopping power. Few firearms can match the blast of a 12-gauge shotgun. Its ability to deliver devastating force with each shot makes it an ideal choice for home defense. The wide array of ammunition types, from buckshot to slugs, allows for versatility in dealing with different threats. Here are a few brands to consider for home defense:

Mossberg 500/590: Mossberg shotguns are renowned for their reliability and ruggedness. The 500 and 590 models offer a variety of configurations, from shorter barrels for maneuverability to extended magazines for increased capacity. The safety location on the top of the receiver makes it ambidextrous and user-friendly.

Remington 870: Another legendary name in shotguns, the Remington 870 is known for its smooth action and dependability. With countless aftermarket parts available, you can customize the 870 to fit your exact needs. Its pump-action design ensures reliable operation, even in high-stress situations.

Benelli M4: For those who prefer a semi-automatic shotgun, the Benelli M4 is a top choice. Used by military and law enforcement worldwide, the M4 offers rapid follow-up shots and minimal recoil (for a shotgun). Its gas-operated system ensures reliability and durability, making it a premium option for home defense.

Whether you opt for a pump-action or semi-automatic model, these shotguns provide the confidence and capability to protect your home effectively. With the right ammunition and training, a 12-gauge shotgun can be a game-changer in home defense scenarios.

Conclusion

Choosing the right firearm for home defense is a critical decision. The firearms listed above offer a range of options, from the compact and reliable Glock 19 to the powerful and versatile 12-gauge shotgun. Each of these firearms has its unique strengths, and the best choice depends on your specific needs and preferences. Whatever you choose, be sure to train and practice regularly to handle your firearm safely and effectively. With the right preparation, you can confidently protect your home and loved ones with one of these top-tier firearms for 2024.
