FN’s New Additions to Big-Bore Family

FN America has released the newest additions to its striker-fired family with the FN 510 MRD and the FN 545 MRD optics-ready pistols. These big-bore pistols are slightly larger than the FN 509 and are said to be ideal for people who want a little more stopping power with their carry weapon.

Available in either 10mm or .45ACP, these 15+1 pistols are ready to go out of the box. The pistol features a 6-pound, target-grade trigger pull that has a crisp break along with the patented optics mount on top that provides enhanced accuracy. With the power of the larger calibers of these pistols, it is a natural fit for personal or home defense, according to FN America.

FN has released two new additions to its big-bore family of pistols. The first is the Optics-Ready FN510 MRD model. This features a cold hammer-forged barrel inside a machined slide. “Following the overwhelmingly positive response to the FN 510 and 545 Tactical, which was released in January, we received customer feedback requesting models in these calibers with flush-fit barrels, day sights, and magazines that were more carry-friendly, as well as accessible in states that restrict threaded barrels or capacity,” said Chris Cole, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FN America, LLC. “These MRD models, following the successful formula of the FN 509 MRD models, feature our patented optics mounting technology in a 15-round grip frame optimized for accuracy and shootability.”

But the big bore calibers aren’t the pistols’ only key features. Both pistols have a flush-fit 4.1″ cold hammer-forged barrel with a recessed target crown and a polished feed ramp for reliable feeding. The barrel sits inside a machined steel slide that features front and rear cocking serrations for easy manipulation when needed. Additionally, the MRD slide has FN’s patented Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System which accepts all major optics footprints. This means consumers can direct mount almost any optic on the slide easily and quickly. Not only that, but the slides also feature a set of fully adjustable blacked-out iron sights that are able to co-witness with most optics giving a clear sight picture of the optic.

The frames feature an ergonomic 15-round grip with three distinct grip textures that are said to perfectly balance the slide and aid in control with the bigger calibers. The pistols ship with backstraps that can be swapped out to better fit the shooter’s hand to deliver a more natural point of aim and reduce felt recoil. To round out the features of the FN 510 MRD and 545 MRD, the controls are ambidextrous for ease of use for right- or left-handed shooters.

A final note, the MRD models are compatible with the other 509 and 545 accessories, like the Tactical barrels and extended magazines. So, the possibilities are there for even more customization for the shooter. Both the FN 510 MRD and 545 MRD are available in either FDE or Black and are out now and have an MSRP of $919.

Patti Miller is one of the most awesome females in the tactical/firearm (or any) industry. Imagine a tall, hawt, dangerous Laura Ingalls Wilder type with cool hair and a suppressed blaster and you'll be getting the idea. What's interesting is that in addition to being a willing brawler and intrepid adventuress, she's also an Ent/Ogier level gardener and a truly badass baker.
