It was announced the US Navy chose Federal Ammunition for its 7.62x51mm rifle ammunition contract. This awarding of the contract to Federal allows for the Navy to purchase the Mk316 Mod 0 ammo over a total of two years.
In documents acquired online, the 7.62×51 Mk316 Mod O solicitation required a projectile between 150-200 grains that would reduce the flash while staying stable regardless of the temperatures around it. The solicitation also required the round to be consistent with accuracy, production components, and performance.
“Federal continues to position itself as a trusted supplier for the U.S. Military and Special Operations,” said Peter Gillette, Federal’s Director of International LE & Military Sales. “We are excited for this contract win. It validates the quality of our products, thoroughness of our testing procedures, and dedication to hard work from our American factory workers.”
The ammunition in question is a 7.62×51, 175-grain precision match rifle load which was based on Federal’s .308 Sierra MatchKing consumer load, with a few tweaks. Of the ammunition submitted for testing, the Federal Ammunitions option was selected for the special ball, long-range option for use with current and future weapons in the caliber. The round has a 30-caliber projectile and a 7.62 match cartridge developed from the .308 Sierra MatchKing cartridge with the Federal Gold Medal Match Primer.
“In general, our match ammunition has a legendary reputation for extreme accuracy, shot after shot, lot to lot. It is trusted time-and-time-again by police and military marksmen,” continued Gillette. “MK316 Mod 0 fits in perfectly with Federal’s history of producing extremely accurate ammunition held to tight tolerances required by strict U.S. Military specifications.”
The contract is not the first for Federal Ammunition, with the company being awarded other contracts over the years for both the US Navy and the US Army. This contract has a two-year term that allows the Navy to purchase the Mk316 Mod 0, 7.62×51 175-grain precision match rifle round. The ammunition will be produced by Federal in its Anoka, Minnesota facility.
