At SHOT Show 2024, there’s much more than just the latest product offerings. This year, the Wisconsin-based U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), a leading authority in firearms education, has unveiled its Defensive Pistol Program (DPP). This groundbreaking meticulously crafted course empowers participants with essential defensive shooting skills. While the actual program is set to launch in the spring, a sneak peek will be offered at SHOT Show 2024.
Since its founding in 2003, the goal of the USCCA has been to provide resources that are easy to find and easier to use for anyone who wants to stay safe and avoid danger. Last year also marked a significant milestone for the association by adding Rob Chadwick, a 20-year FBI veteran, to the team to spearhead the USCCA’s tactical training program.
The DPP course employs a dual approach through incorporating both live and dry-fire training methods for a well-rounded skill development experience. Notably, the DPP draws upon motor learning and skill acquisition science for a curriculum rooted in objective and performance-based training. Accordingly, participants will gain a profound understanding of firearm use in a defensive context, supported by practical experience.
The DPP’s overarching goal is to equip responsibly armed citizens with tools and knowledge to prevail in dynamic critical incidents. Tim Schmidt, Chairman and Cofounder of the USCCA, said,
At the heart of the Defense Pistol Program lies our dedication to reshaping the landscape of defensive firearms training. We strive to empower individuals with the knowledge and transformative skills needed to navigate real-world situations effectively, and Rob’s unparalleled expertise and commitment to excellence while overseeing all USCCA forthcoming curriculum will undoubtedly strengthen that mission.
The DPP will cover a variety of vital training aspects including safety concepts, proper gear selection, and shooting techniques. Furthermore, the course structure will blend theory, hands-on practice, and rigorous evaluation as a foundation for more advanced technical training. The DPP thoroughly encompasses crucial metrics such as draw time, shot splits, and the achievement of evaluation standards. This meticulous evaluation process ensures participants honed their skills effectively, providing a clear path for continuous improvement.
Rob Chadwick, the USCCA’s Director of Education and Training had the following to say about the DPP,
With the Defense Pistol Program, we’re introducing an all-encompassing initiative that includes both a certified instructor course and end-user training. This upcoming launch underscores our commitment to providing a comprehensive training ecosystem, catering to both those imparting the knowledge and those seeking to enhance their ability to be their own defender.
While employed with the FBI, Mr. Chadwick developed and implemented comprehensive training programs for agents at all levels. Previously, he was the head of the FBI Academy’s Tactical Training Program. He also previously served as Agent-In-Charge for U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr’s protective detail.
