Straight-walled cartridges offer a great deal to both hunters and sport shooters, and the new 400 Legend promises superior overall performance. Now that the cartridge has hit the market, you might be looking for a gun chambered in it. Savage Arms is here to help with more than a dozen 400 Legend chambered rifles launching for 2023.

Savage Arms announced they’re proud to partner with Winchester Ammunition to manufacture several rifles chambered in 400 Legend. The guns are hitting the market just in time for 2023 hunting seasons, giving hunters a chance to use the latest straight-walled cartridge in the field.
The cartridge is described as a hard-hitting, yet mildly recoiling, caliber. The first three models to be produced chambered in 400 Legend will be the 110 Apex Hunter XP, 110 Hog Hunter, and Axis II XP. According to Savage, there will be 11 more models manufactured chambered in the cartridge in the coming calendar year.

Straight-walled cartridges, such as the 400 Legend and its predecessor, the 350 Legend, are especially ideal for states like Ohio and Michigan. That’s because the creation of these cartridges gives greater options in states and for hunters who are being limited to shotgun slugs or historically limited rifle calibers. Of course, straight-walled cartridges have also gained traction outside of traditional shotgun slug areas thanks to their versatility and overall performance. Savage believes the 400 Legend will enhance and further this legacy.

Beth Shimanski, Director of Marketing at Savage Arms, said, “Savage is dedicated to chambering the best calibers for hunters and shooters. The 400 Legend brings ballistic advances and advantages—and when combined with our extensive rifle lineup—the benefits only increase. Deer hunters are in for a treat this fall as we’ll have 14 options available in plenty of time for this season.”
Savage reports the straight-walled cartridge offers 100% more energy than 12 gauge slugs and as much as 55% less felt recoil. In comparison to its rifle counterparts and predecessors, the 400 Legend delivers energy equal to that of the 450 Bushmaster, only with a reduction in felt recoil of 20%. The 400 Legend also offers 25% more energy than the 350 Legend for greater penetration and improved terminal ballistics.
MSRP for the new rifles depends on the specific model.
