S&W M&P 22 Magnum: Lots of 22 WMR Fun

30+1 with one in the chamber and the magazine topped off. That’s what the new Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Magnum brings to your holster. Let’s take a look-see at the new pistol.

The 22 WMR is very effective for small game, and overkill for some rodents. It can also be a pragmatic self-defense option in some cases — a shooter who struggles with arthritis, for instance, or one who is sensitive to recoil but understands the need for a defensive handgun. It’s not a caliber that should be dismissed.

Perhaps the most (relatively) interesting thing about the MP22 is what they’re calling TEMPO. It’s a gas-operated barrel system that holds everything in place after firing until the bullet passes the gas port. The concept isn’t new, but the admittedly limited initial reports I’ve seen indicate the system does a good job of making the MP22 run smoothly and reliably.

The MP22 Magnum is a full-size polymer frame pistol with a stainless steel barrel and flat-face trigger.

The MP22 isn’t striker-fired. It utilizes an internal hammer, which many shooters opine gives a smoother trigger pull and crisper break. Like flat-face (which this weapon has) vs standard triggers and other design elements, this will likely have more of an impact on gun debates than on actual everyman gun shooting, but it will matter to potential buyers with an informed preference.

The gun has a number of the features we’ve come to expect in a modern pistol, including ambidextrous operation, an optics-ready slide, and an accessory rail. The 4.35-inch barrel is stainless steel with Smith & Wesson’s Armorite finish. The sights are fiber optic up front and black notches in the rear.

The first magazines available have a 30-round capacity. It’s certainly possible we’ll see higher capacity mags or magazine extensions become available but that will obviously depend upon popularity and demand.
