Kimber has announced the launch of the KDS9c semi-auto and invites NRAAM 2023 attendees to come to see it. We won’t enter the nomenclature debate about 2011 vs. double-stack 1911; we’ll just say the KDS9c has a high contour beavertail, thumb safety on the side, and a 15-round standard capacity double-stack magazine.
You call it what you want.
Features of the KDS9c include:
- The barrel is fully fluted, crowned, and ramped.
- The mag release is reversible for left- or right-handed shooters.
- Etching on the front strap and grips plus a high undercut trigger guard aid grip and weapon manipulation.
- It has an optics-ready plate in addition to its fiber optic front/adjustable rear sights.
- The hammer is skeletonized with ergonomic outer geometry.
- The weapon is chambered in 9 x 19mm.
Size matters. Not many people can carry a full-size handgun and conceal it effectively—and many of those who can, don’t want to! At 1.33 inches wide, the KDS9c is a third again the “thickness” of most micro-compacts (like the Hellcat, P365, etc.), but that’s still pretty small.
With the increasing availability of “extendo mags” and “extendo grips,” we’re seeing an ever greater magazine capacity. A 15-round mag provides plenty of ready ammunition without utilizing a mag extension that might jut out overtly under a cover garment. Many people who carry a semi-auto concealed prefer to have a basic flush-fit mag topped off and inserted for immediate work and an extended magazine or a mag fitted with a magazine extension on standby as their reload.
