Diamondback Introduces a 21st Century Take on the ‘Tommy Gun’

It was over a century ago, as the First World War was being waged in Europe, that General John Thompson of the United States Army envisioned a new type of firearm. Known originally as the Annihilator and designed for use in the trenches of the Western Front, the subsequent Thompson submachine gun arrived too late to see service at the frontlines. However, Thompson went on to found the Auto-Ordnance Corporation (AOC), which produced what was arguably the first “black gun.”

It featured a fixed stock, pistol grip, foregrip, and a drum magazine.

The “Tommy Gun” – as it is often known – retains a mystique among shooters today, and for 2024, Florida-based Diamondback Firearms has rolled out the TG-Nine, which builds on the company’s popular DB9R series. It combines the features of the company’s 9mm pistol caliber carbine line with those of the Thompson SMG, providing a retro take on the iconic firearm.

“Introducing the TG-Nine. Our DB9R has been overhauled w/a CFP Walnut Tommy Gun Style fixed stock/grip/foregrip, a DB Tommy Gun Style flash hider, & a Magpul PMAG D-50 mag to give a tip of the cap to the vintage look, all packaged in a Savior Equipment 45” Ultimate Guitar Case,” Diamondback Firearms announced via X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The TG-Nine features a Custom Firearm Products-made walnut fixed stock and pistol grip, along with a 7075 T-6 Aluminum receiver, a 5-pound Mil-Spec AR trigger, and Diamondback’s black nitride 9R series bolt carrier. While it has a Thompson-style foregrip, it still offers a full 15-inch M-LOK handguard complete with a full top Pic rail and QD mounts. The 16-inch medium profile 4150 CrMov barrel is presented in black nitrided and has a Thompson 5/8×28 flash hider. It is chambered for 9mm and is compatible with Glock-pattern 9mm double-stack magazines.
