Real Avid Master Armorers Kit: Is It Worth the Money?

If you own an AR-15 there is a good chance you will want to make upgrades or perform some type of maintenance on it. There are a lot of pins, springs, and other parts in an AR-15, but they are not as complicated as you might think. Most of the time it’s not having the right tool that makes upgrading or repairing the rifle feel complicated. But when you have the right tools, you can make your rifle just how you want it. The AR-15 is by far the most popular gun to customize, and the options are endless.

Real Avid Master Armorer Kit - AR-15 Repair
The Real Avid Master AR-15 Armorers Kit gives you every tool needed to work on an AR-15 rifle. I have built multiple rifles and repaired countless others with Real Avid tools.

After buying my second AR-15, I started learning more about the accessories and upgrades that can be done to a rifle. I wanted to change the pistol grip and then the handguard. Once you start making changes, it never stops. Looking back over the years, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a rifle I didn’t make some type of changes to. After completing my first armorer’s school, I saw the need to perform inspections on my rifles periodically and ensure each part is in good working condition. The Real Avid Master Armorers Kit has 14 essential tools needed to build, repair, and maintain an AR-15 rifle. Every tool in the master kit is needed, but here are the ones I use the most.

Smart Fit AR-15 Lower Vice Block

Trying to work on a rifle without something holding it steady can be frustrating, so the lower vice block is a tool I use almost daily. It fits into the mag-well and locks into place just like the magazine does. The other end can be clamped into a vice to hold the AR-15 in place when being worked on. The lower vice block has an adjustment handle on the bottom to make sure it fits tightly into the mag-well. When the upper receiver is removed, the lower receiver can be placed on the vice block upside down to replace the pistol grip.

Lower Vice Block
The lower vice block is one of my favorite tools to use with the AR-15. It can help hold the rifle securely with a table-mounted vice while performing maintenance or repairs.

I leave the lower vice block clamped in the vice and use it anytime I am working on my rifle. Having the rifle secure when installing an optic or other attachment makes the process much easier. When replacing a trigger group, safety/selector, slide stop, or mag release, it is a lifesaver. Real Avid makes a lot of great high-quality tools, but the smart-fit lower block is one of the best things they have ever made.

Armorers Master Wrench

An armorer’s wrench is another item you will use often if you plan to make any upgrade to your AR-15 rifle/pistol. This thing is cool and much more than just a wrench. I think Real Avid wanted to see how many tools they could fit into one tool. The result wasn’t just a tool that was okay; this thing is awesome. It doesn’t feel bulky or heavy and is comfortable to hold.  The wrench will work on a mil-spec and free-float barrel nut. It has a hammer on one end with multiple hammer heads that can be changed.

AR-15 Master Wrench
Real Avid’s Master Armorers Wrench is the best armorer’s wrench I have used. It is durable, light, and includes multiple tools in one.

Here is what you get with the master wrench:

  • 3/4” muzzle break wrench
  • Castle nut wrench
  • Torque specs printed on the handle
  • 1/2” torque wrench receiver
  • 5/8” fixed stock receiver extension wrench
  • Interchangeable hammer head with steel, rubber, nylon, and brass hammer heads

The Real Avid Master Armorer’s Wrench retails for $79.99 when purchased separately but is included with the master kit.

Pin Punch Set

If you do anything beyond field stripping and cleaning your AR-15, you will need to remove some type of pin. The Real Avid Master Kit includes a pin/punch set with every size of hammer and role-punch needed. It has a punch-alignment tool and a pin-alignment tool. The alignment tool holds the role pin in the end of the punch when installing the bolt stop. All the pins that hold an AR-15 together is what intimidates most people who have not built or disassembled an AR-15. Having a punch made for an AR-15 rifle makes the job so much easier. The Real Avid punch set is made of hardened, high-quality, nickel-plated steel. You never want to use cheap punches when working on a firearm. They can bend and cause damage to the gun.
