Glock Magwell by Tyrant Designs: Does Your Glock Need One?

The AR-15 has become the “Lego” gun for gun gurus, but handguns are starting to become a hot item to customize as well. For years, the 1911 was the most popular customizable handgun on the market. It still sits atop that list, but Glocks, Sigs, and a host of other guns are moving in to stay. Today, we are looking at the Tyrant Designs magwell for Glock handguns and the benefits of having one. I will cover the installation of the magwell too, but it’s so easy I’m not sure “installation” is even a proper term for it.

The Tyrant Designs magwell is one of the simplest parts to install. It takes one screw and about 30 seconds of your time.

It’s hard to decide what upgrades to make on each gun. Sometimes I start looking for a specific part to upgrade and end up wanting to replace every part on the gun. Then I start to wonder if it would be better to just build a new gun and leave the old one alone. But if you want a custom gun that makes the other guys and gals gawk, upgrading one part at a time can be a fun project. A custom-finished gun can be expensive so adding a part here and there also makes it easier on the bank. For Glocks, this may include the barrel, trigger, mag release, slide release, slide frame, and more. The magwell is one of those upgrades that is cheap and easy to do.

Installing the Tyrant Designs Magwell

Tyrant Designs makes magwells for multiple guns including Glock handguns. The one I’m installing today is for the Glock 19 Gen 5. I chose black, but there are six colors to choose from if you want a specific look. The installation takes about 30 seconds. There is one screw that holds the magwell on and the wrench is included with the magwell. This is one of those parts that is so easy to figure out, they didn’t even include instructions in the package. But this is a review so we will go over the process anyway.

In the package, you get two things. The magwell and wrench. To install the magwell, simply push it on over the bottom of the grip so that the hole in the magwell lines up with the hole in the back of the grip on the gun. Secure it with the screw and be sure not to over-tighten. And that’s it! When I said 30 seconds I wasn’t joking!

The magwell is aluminum so it is light and durable. There are different magwells for each model of gun so make sure the one you order will fit your gun.

Improved Reloading

Loading a handgun is an essential skill for any gun owner, whether they use it for self-preservation or competitions. Being able to reload quickly can often make all the difference in winning or losing a fight. The Tyrant Designs magwells are designed to make reloading easier and faster. They do this by creating a funneling action that helps guide the magazine into the grip. They make an ideal upgrade for any Glock pistol when seconds matter during timed shooting drills or competition shoots.

Standard Glock mags and mag extenders both worked great with the Tyrant magwell.

Reloading quickly is key in many situations, particularly emergency scenarios where fumbles could mean the difference between life and death. With ergonomic improvements, forward relief cuts, and an aggressive funnel design, Tyrant Designs Glock 19/23 Magwells will help boost your loading speeds. This isn’t something you notice until you’re on the range trying to reload while keeping your eyes on the target.

Compatibility

The magwell boasts a slim profile for concealable carry convenience. While magwell is slim, it still widens the grip just enough at the bottom to help improve the shooter’s retention of the gun. This may not be as comfortable for someone with larger hands but for others, it makes the gun comfortable to hold. Those with large hands may want to try the magwell on a full-side Glock, like the Glock 22.

The magwell not only helps with quicker reloading times, but it also improves the grip of the Glock 19.

The magwell will work with any type of magazine that is compatible with Glock guns. Just to be sure, I used some standard mags, mags with extenders, and several aftermarket mags. Because the magwell is flared out, it doesn’t get in the way of any part of the magazine. When I grip it, my pinky finger falls on the sloped part of the magwell which puts just a little upward pressure on my hand. I found this caused me to keep a better grip as I fired the gun.

Summary

If you want to enhance the speed of magazine reloading on your Glock 19/23 pistol, the Tyrant CNC Magwell is an ideal solution. Installation is simple. It is crafted from aluminum and the small amount of weight it adds helps improve performance during loading operations. Tyrant Designs also offers other parts in matching colors for those who want to upgrade several parts for a custom look.

Every gun owner, whether they shoot competition or not, wants their gear to work at its best. You don’t need to spend a fortune on fancy upgrades, but if you want your equipment to perform better, you should look for smart upgrades that combine several functions and do a good job at each. The Tyrant Designs magwell has a simple design that makes the most of your gun without overcrowding or compromising concealability.
