There is more to celebrate this fall than just the arrival of football season and Oktoberfest. German firearms maker Walther has unveiled its latest line of handguns, including new offerings in its PDP, PP, PPK/S, and WMP series. Welcome to TEQfest 2024!

The PDP F-Series Pro

Starting off the new releases for fall 2024 is the PDP F-Series Pro, available with both 3.5-inch and 4-inch barrels. Each is built with Walther’s hallmark TEQ (Trigger, Ergonomics, and Quality) philosophy. Chambered for 9mm, the firearms offer 18 and 10-round magazine capacity, reduced slide force, and grip circumference.

The first is the standard model which is made with ambidextrous controls and offered with or without a Picatinny rail for accessories. Second is the Shape, a pistol created for specific contouring and comfort. The Shape doesn’t have ambidextrous controls because it’s made for deep concealment, but it does have a specially shaped slide and frame. Capacity for the pistols is 10 +1 with the flush fit magazine and said to be 13 +1 with an extended magazine.

Magpul has issued updates to the Magpul/Zev Tech Folding Defensive Pistol (FDP) and Carbine (FDC), as well as the Magpul/Maztech X4 System for the US Government.

The post Magpul FDP, FDC, and Magpul/Maztech Program Updates appeared first on The Mag Life.

Magpul has had its hand in some pretty major projects over the years, collaborating with other companies to come up with some pretty neat things. One of the first things people think of when you mention this is the Magpul/Zev Tech Folding Defensive Pistol (FDP) and Carbine (FDC). The other project folks think of is the Magpul/Maztech X4 System for the US Government. They have now issued updates to these programs.

Magpul and Zev Technologies

The Folding Defensive Pistol idea has been floating around Magpul for about a decade, with the partnership with Zev Technologies happening within the last few years to develop the Pistol and Carbine. According to Magpul, the program has now moved into the final testing and production planning phase and will have the FDP-9 and FDC-9 available in the 2023 calendar year.

Magpul and Zev Technologies have issued an update to their much anticipated Folding Defense Pistol and Folding Defense Carbine. The program is in final testing and production planning, with products becoming available later in 2023. (Photo credit: Magpul)

The distinction between the FDP-9 and the FDC-9 means that the end user will be able to purchase it like a pistol, while the FDC-9 is classified as a short-barreled rifle (SBR). The end user will be able to convert the FDP to an FDC with a conversion part (after receiving an approved Form 1 from the ATF, of course), or it can be purchased as a factory SBR with an approved ATF Form 4.

The FDP-9 is a complete redesign from the original folding firearm which Magpul admits was just a concept and demonstration piece. The new design increases durability, reliability, and practicality, and allowed the companies to incorporate important safety features. It also allowed for regulatory compliance items that were needed to create the firearm.

No word on the pricing of the different models as of yet, but more information should be released in the coming months.

Magpul and Maztech

Magpul and Maztech Technologies made big news in 2022 by partnering to co-develop the round-counting system for the US Government inquiry as a piece of a larger group of products to level up the military and its capabilities. Now, the two companies have decided to take that suite of products and make them available to the public to expand situational awareness and increase targeting accuracy. The program for the public is called the X4.

The electronic round counter from Magpul and Maztech is a part of the large suite of items from the X4 program.
The first few products of the X4 that will be coming out will give a sensor and information fusion to support precise weapon employment, according to a joint statement. The Maztech X4-FCS (Fire Control System) will match up a low-powered variable optic with a visual display that uses range, ballistic data, rounds remaining, and other information important to the shooter. With the X4-FCS there will be an electronic round counter that can send information regarding the ammo to the X4-FCS or another display off-rifle.

These two products are under development and more information, including pricing and shipping, will be available later in 2023.

Photos of a possible Glock M4-like carbine have set the interwebs abuzz this week. The photos were leaked by an unnamed someone associated with the British Army’s Alternate Individual Weapon System (AIWS) trials. Yesterday, Glock officially confirmed the carbine’s existence to Ammoland News.

The Glock Carbine’s participation in British Army trials has been confirmed.

Glock Communications Manager Ainsley Cash Connor told Ammoland that,

“Glock is always in development of future products and technologies through the pursuit of perfection. The image shared is of a product developed for select solicitations and it is not available for the general market at this time.”

As we reported earlier this week, the British Army’s new Special Operations Brigade is testing weapons to replace the old and less-than-ideal Enfield SAR-80/L-85 bullpup rifle. Some British special ops units are known to use M4 platforms and the new weapon’s specifications required an Armalite-style rifle. Formally called the Alternate Individual Weapon System, the new carbines will equip the four Ranger Battalions that make up the Special Operations Brigade.

Glock Carbine Known Specs and Features

Rumors Confirmed

This rifle’s existence has been rumored since Glock patents became public last year. We reported on that, and you can view the patents here. Which of those patents are included in the RF-115F is not known for certain, though we can make educated guesses. For instance, the apparently quick detach capable handguard indicates the new rifle includes Glock’s adjustable gas system, which was one of the patents.

Other Glock patented features appear to include the upper and lower receivers’ geometry, bolt catch, magazine catch, charging handle, and barrel-rail interface.

Glock Carbine Coming Soon?

Well, that’s a definite “maybe.” The company’s statement said that “The image shared is of a product developed for select solicitations and it is not available for the general market at this time.”

So, let’s break that down a little because that’s what we do. Glock says the image is of “a product developed for select solicitations.” All that means is that we are looking at a firearm made specifically for a military trial. It’s not for public sale. But that could simply mean Glock isn’t dropping a select fire option on the market.

We might see a civilian Glock Carbine, but it won’t be exactly like this one.

Or it could mean Glock won’t include that optic, which is certainly tailored for the current trials. Glock simply said that “the image shared” is of a product not available. That does not mean they don’t plan to release a semi-auto civilian version down the road. Even if they hadn’t planned to do that, the excitement generated by these photos would surely set off the lightbulb in someone’s head.

Given Glock’s reputation, and the sheer number of dedicated Glock fanbois, that seems like a no-brainer. I guess we will see. But, for now, we know this prototype exists. It would be difficult to believe Glock dedicated all that work to not capitalize on it commercially.

Team SIG’s Daniel Horner has refined the platform to meet his competition needs and developed the ultimate 3-Gun rifle, the…M400-DH3 from SIG Custom Works. The new M400-DH3 from SIG Custom Works gives you the same competitive edge and the same rifle used by 10-time 3 gun champion Daniel Horner.

Although it is listed as being chambered in 5.56 NATO, it does have a 223 Wylde barrel, meaning the shooter will get superior accuracy whether running 5.56 NATO or 223 Remington. The handguard has a Picatinny rail over the receiver and at the muzzle end and is M-LOK compatible, so shooters can add whatever accessories are needed for competition or range use. It has a 2-stage trigger made by Timney Triggers which is, in fact, the company’s Daniel Horner Signature Trigger, and ambidextrous controls. Each rifle ships with a 30-round magazine.

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature of the Sig Sauer M400 DH3 is the stock, which was designed by Daniel Horner. It’s adjustable for length of pull and has a unique aesthetic that is attention-getting, to say the least. The streamlined design also serves to reduce overall weight and create a more balanced rifle.

FN’s popular line of tactical pistols includes the FN 509 Midsize Tactical pistol. The pistol is red-dot and suppressor ready with a capacity of 15 rounds. And, as a mid-sized handgun, it offers benefits that come with a full-sized slide and medium-sized frame.

FN’s Tactical pistol line includes the 509 Midsize Tactical pistol. It is said to be the ideal combination of FN’s full-size tactical slide with a compact pistol.

Here’s what the company had to say about it:

FN America, LLC is pleased to introduce the FN 509 Midsize Tactical. Joining the ranks alongside FN’s other successful Tactical pistols like the FN 509 Tactical and Compact Tactical, the FN 509 Midsize Tactical is the ideal combination of FN’s full-size tactical slide. Equipped with the versatile Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System and midsize grip frame, the FN 509 Midsize Tactical is a perfectly balanced pistol that’s optics-ready, multi-role capable, and optimized for shootability.

“Building on the success of both the FN 509 Tactical and the FN 509 Midsize, our team combined the best features of both pistols into the FN 509 Midsize Tactical,” said Chris Cole, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FN America, LLC. “The 15-round grip frame with the optics-ready tactical slide assembly offers our customers another strong contender for concealed carry and personal protection in the FN 509 family.”

The pistol weighs just over 27 ounces unloaded, and according to FN, it is an ideal option for concealed carry, home defense, and duty use.

Weighing in at just under 30 ounces unloaded, the gun positions itself as an ideal option for concealed carry, home defense, and duty use. Its midsize frame, which enables users to get a full-hand purchase, plus the added mass of the 4.5-inch threaded barrel assembly and improved, duty-rated trigger provide unprecedented controllability and recoil management in a pistol that is easily concealed.

“FN is well known for setting the industry standard for tactical pistols starting with the FNX-45 Tactical. Features like a threaded barrel, suppressor-height night sights, extended capacity and most importantly, optics-ready,” said Chris Johnson, Senior Pistol Product Manager for FN America, LLC. “The FN 509 Midsize Tactical delivers all of those tactical features that FN customers expect in a package that is perfectly proportioned for everyday carry and much more.”

Smith & Wesson announced the company is now shipping the new Model 360 revolver. This new J-frame wheel gun is a bit unusual in that it, as a “plain” Model 360, joins the Model 360 PD that is already in the company’s catalog.

The New 360 Revolver

The just-released revolver is a 5-shot handgun that is designed for the .357 Magnum cartridge. As with most .357 Magnum handguns, this revolver will also shoot .38 Special loads including the +P variety.

It is built on the company’s J-frame. This is the current small frame used for the more diminutive Smith & Wesson wheelies. Unlike many of the J-frames built of aluminum, this one uses a scandium alloy.

For the non-chemistry crowd, scandium is a naturally occurring element, not a marketing name. While offering a lighter weight frame at a similar strength level when compared to a typical aluminum alloy, scandium alloy tends to be a bit more expensive. The simple reason is scandium is not as common an element as iron, aluminum, and some other metals. In fact, it is often extracted from deposits of uranium and rare earth ores.

The use of scandium, therefore, drives the price up and the weight down.

The suggested retail price is $770. Compared to the all stainless Model 60, this gun is about 6.5 ounces lighter for only $41 extra. Not a bad trade-off in my book.

It’s been my experience that Magnum loads really kick with featherweight revolvers like this one. I am not suggesting that this gun is going to be uncontrollable.

Lightweight Magnum revolvers are quite controllable when shot with good technique. This is not a beginner gun, though. Don’t buy one for your spouse or significant other unless they have requested it.

Smith & Wesson uses a black PVD finish on the gun. PVD, or particle vapor deposition, is a metal finish that has been growing in popularity in the gun industry. It allows a company to apply a wide range of colors to a firearm while also providing good durability and corrosion resistance. In the past, S&W has not used PVD extensively. I wonder if we will see more PVD finishes from it in the future.

Offsetting the black finish is a set of two-piece rubber grips that are flat dark earth in color. The grips used on this gun are longer than the standard boot grip used on many of the small revolvers from Smith & Wesson. For most shooters, this means you can get a full firing grip on the gun.

This model has a red insert in the front sight for improved visibility when compared to the plain ramp found on many J-frame guns. The rear sight is a machined notch in the frame at the rear of the top strap.

Unfortunately, the Model 360 revolver has the internal lock that Smith & Wesson installs on most of its modern revolvers. While the problems with these locks have been largely overblown, all of the problems I have read about have come from the lightweight guns. Hopefully, the problems have been completely resolved and will not create any issues with this gun.

The “Other” 360 Revolver

Still in the company’s catalog is the Model 360 PD. The gun is very similar to the original Model 360 (also referred to as the Model 360 SC) that was introduced at the 2001 SHOT Show. That original model was discontinued leaving only the 360 PD as a current production model.

Both the original 360 and 360 PD also use a scandium alloy frame, but with a fluted titanium cylinder. In the 360 PD, this reduces the overall weight to only 11.4 ounces. The reduced weight is great for carrying but does create an issue for reliability.

With such a lightweight revolver, recoil is increased. Due to the increased recoil, light bullets can actually “jump” their crimp and “walk” out of the case. If a bullet moves very far forward, it can lock the cylinder up and prevent the gun from firing. For this reason, Smith & Wesson states only loads with bullet weights of 120 grains and more be shot from the 360 PD. The same warning was given for the original Model 360. I would also add that if you are shooting hand loads, make sure you are crimping correctly.

Bullet walking appears to have been eliminated in the newest Model 360 as the warning is not given on it. I suspect the few extra ounces of weight is enough to prevent this condition.

Increased recoil also translates to the shooter. I’ve shot one of these with full power 125 grain .357 Magnum loads, and it does bark. However, it is completely controllable and accurate. It would overwhelm a new shooter, so please don’t hand one of these to a novice. It could turn them off to shooting completely.

Another difference in the PD model is that it uses a Hi-Viz red fiber optic front sight for even better visibility. However, this is counteracted by a reduction in shootability because of the use of stubby boot grips.

The final major difference between the two guns is that the PD model is significantly more expensive: $1,019. The titanium cylinder is largely responsible for that price increase.

The Forgotten 360s: M&P360 and Kit Gun

There are a pair of longer barreled Model 360 revolvers that briefly made an appearance in the Smith & Wesson line, but they have since been discontinued. One was the M&P360 and the other was the Model 360 Kit Gun.

The M&P360 was introduced in 2009* as a longer barreled version of this gun. It was still built on a scandium J-frame, but the 3” barrel and fluted stainless steel cylinder increased the weight to 14.7 ounces. This eliminated the problems with bullet walking.

For this gun, Smith & Wesson went with a Standard Dot tritium front sight from XS Sights. This gave shooters a glowing night sight from the factory if they desired one. The gun had a black PVD coating and the same size grip as the new Model 360.

Another longer barreled gun was the Kit Gun version.

In addition to the longer barrel, it also differentiated itself from the smaller guns with the use of a Hi-Viz fiber optic sight (like the one on the 360 PD) and a Micrometer adjustable rear sight.

* Smith & Wesson’s sale sheet on the M&P 360 revolver shows the gun was launched in July of 2009. However, the 4th edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson states the gun was shown at the 2007 SHOT Show. It is possible that an early prototype was on display at the SHOT Show, but that the gun did not ship until two years later.
