It is Glock's first "Crossover" gun, which is what the "X" stands for.

[caption id="attachment_3538" align="alignnone" width="750"] The G19X with a TLR7.[/caption]

So why did Glock decide to make a hybrid?

Good question, especially when you consider that the larger grip made it less concealable.

But there was a reason for that. The Glock 19X was originally intended to be an open-carry sidearm, with a specific end-user in mind.

Back in 2016, the U.S. Army ran trials for a new Modular Handgun System (MHS). They were looking to replace the Beretta M9, requiring a shorter slide and greater capacity without an extended baseplate.

Now, if you consider who was going to be using the new MHS firearms, it all makes sense. These guns were going to go to the guys who often operate in constricted spaces, stacked in choppers, amphibious assault vehicles, and the like. In those confined spaces, they're also wearing bulky body armor, and they need their equipment to function together as well as possible. With a shorter slide, they're able to get a faster draw from beneath their armor, and with a larger grip, they get more capacity.

Glock's entry to the MHS trials was the Glock MHS, which ultimately lost out to the Sig P320, but Glock didn't give up on the MHS. They removed the manual thumb safety and optic cut, changed the name to Glock 19X, and made it available to civilians.

[caption id="attachment_3041" align="alignnone" width="750"] The Glock MHS had a few other switch-ups including the Coyote Tan color and the lanyard loop.[/caption]

Gen 5 or not?

Something to remember about this model is that it's a Gen 5 Glock with Gen 5 features, like the Glock Marksman Barrel, ambidextrous slide stop lever, flared magwell, etc. But, there can be just a little bit of confusion about the magazines. Since the grip is a G17, it seems fairly reasonable that G17 magazines should work just fine, right?

Well...mostly! The only hangup is that Gen 5 Glock 17 magazines have baseplates that extend out past the front strap protuberance on the Glock 19X grip. Because of that, the Gen 5 G17 mags won't seat into the magwell without replacing the base plates with something that will fit. It's not a huge issue but is worth paying attention to when ordering magazines for your G19X.

[caption id="attachment_54498" align="alignnone" width="750"] The Magpul 17 round Glock PMAG is compatible with the Glock 19X.[/caption]

Want to read more about the Glock 19X?
