They’ve introduced some well-received revolvers, as well as nice new semi-auto pistols like the G2, G3, and GX4 series. One of their coolest new guns is the G3 Tactical, which Taurus calls “the first factory custom variant of the G3 9mm defensive handgun.” We got our mitts on a G3 Tactical a few months ago and put it through its paces.

The Taurus G3 Tactical is a very nice gun for not a lot of money. (Author’s Photo)

We want to note that Taurus provided this handgun for review purposes. That fact in no way influenced our results. We’ve run it hard and, given our skepticism based on some other Taurus products, the G3 Tactical had a lot to prove.

I bought a Taurus Model 66 revolver in 1986. It was a good gun then and it’s a good gun now. But in 2011, I purchased a concealed carry Taurus semi-auto that was so altogether unimpressive that I don’t even recall the model. I sold it a few months later. Finally, my Dad bought a Taurus Judge sometime around 2010 and it was nothing but trouble. So, we were fully prepared to not like the G3 Tactical. I’m happy to say that we were pleasantly surprised.

Taurus G3 Tactical Specifications

Caliber: 9mm Luger

Capacity: 17+1

Action: Single Action with Restrike Capability

Barrel Length: 4.5 inches

Overall Length: 7.76 inches

Overall Height: 5.38 inches

Overall Width: 1.2 inches

Weight (Unloaded): 25.8 ounces

We ran the G3 Tactical with several ammo brands, FMJ and hollow point. (Author’s Photo).

Nice Features

The G3 Tactical is an upgraded duty version of the well-regarded G3 semi-automatic pistol line. The G3 is considered a budget pistol, but it performs quite well indeed. Taurus seems to have found its current niche, by offering quality handguns at very competitive prices. The G3 Tactical builds on that by adding enhanced features. Those features include:

A threaded stainless-steel barrel with Diamond Like Coating (DLC).

Extra recoil spring for running suppressed.

The Taurus Optic Ready Option (T.O.R.O.)

Suppressor height sights that can also co-witness with a red dot.

The Taurus G Series 2-stage flat-faced trigger with restrike capability.

An exclusive “Patriot Brown” Cerakote slide and Magpul FDE colored frame.

The barrel has the common ½ x 28” thread pitch, making it easy to add a muzzle device or suppressor. We’re running a Lakeline Micro Compensator on ours. The included extra recoil spring is a nice touch, making suppressing the G3 Tactical even easier. And you don’t have to change your sights since the G3 Tactical comes standard with suppressor height sights. The only thing we don’t like about the sights is that the front blade is blacked out, making it difficult to see against certain backgrounds. But a luminescent paint marker will fix that right up.

The G3 Tactical is also optic ready, thanks to the standard T.O.R.O. system. The gun ships with plates for Leupold Delta Point Pro, Trijicon RMR, Vortex Venom, Holosun 407c/507c, Noblex/Docter, C-More STS2, and FastFire footprint optics. We’re running the Vortex Venom on our gun.

The G3 tactical offers many options for red dot optics. (Author’s Photo)

The “flat-faced” trigger isn’t really all that flat, like the trigger on our Sig P365XL. But we’ve never cared all that much anyway. The single-action trigger is surprisingly good for a gun in this price range. There’s a little take-up to the wall, followed by a clean break. Not the best factory trigger we’ve fired, but surely not the worst, or even near that end of the spectrum. And it’s a lot better than the factory Glocks we’ve fired.

We particularly like the trigger’s restrike function, even though we never had to use it at the range. But we do use it quite a bit in dry fire. The restrike is mushy compared to the single action, but not having to rack the slide between trigger pulls is very nice when dry firing. We use the G3 Tactical a lot for trigger pull drills.

Finally, the Patriot Brown Cerakote makes for a sharp-looking handgun. A small thing, of course, but most people I know like their guns to look good. Including me. And we must mention the soft carrying case. We know it’s not a big deal, but the Taurus-branded zipper case is awesome, with pockets and Velcro hold straps. We love touches like that.

Taurus includes this nice soft case with the G3 Tactical. (Author’s Photo)

The G3 Tactical’s only real downside is the lack of ambidexterity. The slide stop is right-handed, as is the mag release. The gun looks like the mag release could be reversible, but despite searching the Taurus website and the gun’s owner’s manual, we could find no mention of it being so. That’s kind of a let-down in 2023, especially for my son and fellow tester, who is actually ambidextrous but prefers to shoot left-handed. Being rather stubborn (he gets it from his Mom) he did it both ways, but focused on left-handed manipulation.

Taurus G3 Tactical Performance

Looks and features are cool, but how does the G3 Tactical run? Glad you asked. Taurus calls it a “tactical” handgun, so we ran it like one. We’re fortunate to have steel-equipped pistol bays in which to train. We took turns running 2-2-2 drills, Mozambique drills, dueling tree competitions, and mag change after mag change. We ran it from a battle belt, since it’s not a concealed carry gun, though you could conceal it if you really wanted to. Since we had a couple of generic holsters lying around, we used one of those.

We ran 115 and 124-grain FMJ and some 124-grain hollow points. We ran different brands, including Magtech, Fiocchi, CCI Blazer, and Federal American Eagle. We’re happy to report that we did not have a single malfunction through either 650 or 700 rounds. I lost count, so it’s one of the two. We mixed ammo brands, but not loads. Nor did we mix ball ammo with hollow point.

The G3 Tactical is a very cool gun. Note the beveled slide. It’s a slick operator. (Author’s Photo)

The slide reliably locked back during every drill and the slide itself is one of the gun’s best features. It has beveled corners for low drag in and out of the holster, which is really slick. But not as slick as the action. The G3 Tactical slide is probably the easiest racking slide we have. It rivals the Smith & Wesson EZ and the Walther PDP F, except that it’s standard. Very, very nice.

The gun was as accurate as we were, and probably more so. We easily held 1 to 2-inch groups out to 10 yards or so. That expanded a little depending on the drills we ran. The groups also opened up as we moved back. But that’s us, not the gun. The higher sights require some getting used to if you’re not familiar with them. But once we did, the only issue was the blacked-out blade against certain backgrounds. The blade co-witnessed nicely with our Venom red dot.

Recoil was very manageable, especially with our compensator. The G3 Tactical has a nice grip, though it doesn’t quite fill my hand the way I like. But that’s mainly just switching from my usual carry guns to something different. I soon got over it. The grip texture is quite aggressive, which my son likes but I don’t. I prefer something a little less sandpapery. But that’s totally subjective, so I’m not knocking the gun. A “tactical” pistol probably should be that way.

G3 Tactical Controls

We’ve already discussed how the trigger is surprisingly good. The slide release is a little more low-profile than we like, and we found it occasionally hard to hit reliably, especially with gloves. The catch is textured, which helps, but we soon started releasing the slide manually, especially after installing the optic. We also wish it were ambidextrous or reversible, but it isn’t.

Stone-cold lefties may have problems manipulating the G3 Tactical. (Author’s Photo)

The mag release is also a bit small, but it is positive. We had no issues ejecting empty mags once we got the muscle memory down. We’ve already discussed the lack of ambidexterity and apparent lack of reversibility, which is disappointing. Though not a deal breaker for me, it may be for others.

A Fantastic Value

Overall, we think the G3 Tactical is a very cool gun with some nice features. It performed well, and has earned a place in our rotation, though it has yet to make the varsity. But it might, depending on whether that performance continues. After all, we still only have 700 or so rounds through the gun. Our only remaining concern is durability. And we think it’s a fair concern since Taurus is still making its way back and because it’s still considered a “budget” gun, no matter how cool it is.

We think the G3 Tactical is a screaming deal. (Author’s Photo)

All we can say is that it looks good so far. Chances are that we run our guns harder, and with more rounds, than many folks, meaning that this may be less of a concern for them. We can’t say. But the value seems to be there. The gun has done nothing but run. And the MSRP of $589.99 is attractive indeed. But even then, we found the G3 Tactical listed online anywhere from $380.99 to $449.99. We think that’s a steal, unless maybe you’re a stone-cold left-hander.

So, if you’re looking for a tricked-out duty-sized pistol, but don’t have a lot to spend, the G3 Tactical might be for you.
