One of the latest offerings is the new S&amp;W 986.<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"7ik45-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7ik45-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7ik45-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-0-0\">This revolver is a blend of <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">seemingly<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-2-0\"> opposing approaches to gun design. To start with, this wheel gun uses a rimless cartridge: the 9mm. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-3-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Rimless cartridges are not <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-4-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">normally<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-5-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> used in a revolver due to the lack of a protruding rim to interface with the cylinder and ejection star<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f1l5u-6-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"1l4s1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1l4s1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1l4s1-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"2fa78-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2fa78-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-0-0\">A non-typical caliber is not the only dichotomy found in the Model 986. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">The Performance Center uses a 2.5&#8243; barrel (with a recessed precision crown) and reduced the gun&#8217;s weight with specific cuts and material use, which would be consistent with a gun aimed at <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">maximum<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-3-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> concealment<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-4-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-5-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Yet, the team went with an oversized grip and full-size combat sights \u2014 two things not <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-6-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">normally<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-7-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> associated with a concealment firearm<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-8-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2fa78-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2fa78-8-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2fa78-0-0\">\n<figure style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Smith &amp; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/523;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smith &amp; Wesson Model 986.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"63q5l-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"63q5l-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"63q5l-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">The result is a handgun that balances very well in the hand and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">is chambered<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> for a serious self-defense cartridge<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-3-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-4-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">While not as easy to conceal as a Model 642, the S&amp;W 986 can still <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-5-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">be carried<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-6-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> under a jacket or shirt with grips that allow very good control of the gun during recoil<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8s0v8-7-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"a7u-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"a7u-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"a7u-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"f7ov2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"f7ov2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"f7ov2-0-0\">I had a chance to see and shoot one of these at the recent SHOT Show, and I <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"f7ov2-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">was impressed by<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"f7ov2-2-0\"> it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"5i2g7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5i2g7-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5i2g7-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"24ts3-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"24ts3-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"24ts3-0-0\">I&#8217;ve always <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"24ts3-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">been intrigued by<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"24ts3-2-0\"> 9mm revolvers. When I saw that Smith &amp; Wesson would be introducing a new one in 2017, I made it a priority to see it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"8ec22-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8ec22-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8ec22-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"7parj-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7parj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7parj-0-0\">My initial impressions are very positive. The S&amp;W 986 looks like a high-end performance gun. The grips are rich wood that set <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"7parj-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">nicely<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"7parj-2-0\"> against the matte stainless steel frame. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"7parj-3-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">The Performance Center opted for a titanium cylinder that is a darker color that is closer to a light graphite<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"7parj-4-0\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7parj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7parj-4-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7parj-0-0\">\n<figure style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Smith &amp; Wesson Model 986\" data-src=\"https:\/\/gunmagwarehouse.com\/media\/wysiwyg\/blog_images\/RJohnson_UL\/Smith_Wesson_986\/Model-986-2.jpg\" alt=\"Smith &amp; Wesson Model 986\" width=\"750\" height=\"550\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 750px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 750\/550;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Combining the three colors looks great in person.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"5i0c-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5i0c-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5i0c-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"6setk-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6setk-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-0-0\">As I mentioned, the gun uses titanium for the cylinder. It <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">is unfluted<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-2-0\">, and it chambers seven of the 9mm cartridges. As you might expect, it <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-3-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">is cut<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-4-0\"> for moon clips. <a href=\"https:\/\/gunmagwarehouse.com\/brands\/smith-wesson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith &amp; Wesson<\/a> includes a pair with each revolver. I would note that buying extra clips is a very smart decision. Clips can <\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-5-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">be lost<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6setk-6-0\"> or damaged at the range.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"ejqep-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ejqep-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ejqep-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"4c0fm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4c0fm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4c0fm-0-0\">The gun weighs a little less than 32 ounces unloaded. To me, that tends to be on the heavy side for a concealment pistol. <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"4c0fm-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">However<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4c0fm-2-0\">, the weight is very well balanced, and it feels much lighter when holding it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"b665-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b665-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b665-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"9ktfm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9ktfm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9ktfm-0-0\">Recoil from a 9mm revolver can be stout in small guns. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9ktfm-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">To give this statement some context, SAAMI specifications on 9mm +P ammunition puts it in the same ballpark as the .357 Magnum<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9ktfm-2-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"7si6q-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7si6q-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7si6q-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"2oq57-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2oq57-0-0\"><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"2oq57-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Surprisingly<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2oq57-1-0\">, the recoil on the Model 986 was closer to that of a .38 Special and not its Magnum brother. Muzzle rise was easy to control thanks to the full-size grip. Also, there was no sting to the hand as you might get from a J-frame.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"37r32-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"37r32-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"37r32-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"2cv4g-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2cv4g-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"2cv4g-0-0\">These guns have the actions tuned by the Performance Center. <\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2cv4g-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">While the double-action trigger is not the nicest I&#8217;ve felt (that&#8217;s a toss-up between my 20-year-old Model 10 and a friend&#8217;s Colt Python), it is very good and well worth the investment<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2cv4g-2-0\">. The single-action trigger is light and crisp &#8211; on par with the venerable Python.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"600pe-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"600pe-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"600pe-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2ocl0\" data-offset-key=\"6d38j-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6d38j-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6d38j-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Anything coming out of the Performance Center is a step above the typical (good quality) Smith &amp; Wesson catalog<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6d38j-1-0\">. As with anything else in life, you have to pay for the added work and tuning. The S&amp;W 986 carries a suggested retail price of $1,129. Considering <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"6d38j-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">all of<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6d38j-3-0\"> the <\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"6d38j-4-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">additional<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6d38j-5-0\"> work done on these guns, the price is quite reasonable.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"6d38j-0-0\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interested in a 9mm revolver that has the Performance Center treatment?
