The Guns of Stranger Things Season 4

The fourth season of Stranger Things came out in the summer of 2022 in two parts. Between the Russian military being one of the main antagonists and the younger cast deciding to arm themselves for various reasons there are plenty of weapons throughout the season. Specifically, some very cool and unique firearms make an appearance on screen. If you haven’t watched this season yet, I would highly recommend you do it before you read this—there are spoilers ahead! So read at your own peril.

Let’s take a look at the guns of Stranger Things — Season 4

The Colt Python

In “Chapter Eight: Papa” Jason Carver (played by Mason Dye) purchases a Colt Python from War Zone Army Navy Surplus. Calling it his ‘pretty .357’ he totes it around the town of Hawkins throughout “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback” practicing his shot on football sleds and threatening a freshman in the attic of an abandoned house.

It is also interesting to point out some issues when he purchased the handgun. According to the fandom wiki, Jason is either 17 or 18. If he is 17 he obviously could not have bought or possessed it. But even at 18, he wouldn’t have been able to. Since he bought from a military surplus, it can be assumed that the seller was a licensed dealer. Hopefully, he is aware of the Gun Control Act of 1968 setting federal law to 18 years old for long guns and 21 for handguns. The only loophole available is if it was a private seller.

He also sweeps—and uses the revolver to gesture—Nancy throughout most of their conversation before he sets it down and grabs the barrel of her shotgun. Not only is he illegally purchasing this handgun, but he also sucks at implementing the fundamental rules of using a firearm. Given his character, I’m not surprised though.

The Winchester Model 1200

In “Chapter Eight: Papa” Nancy Wheeler (played by Natalia Dyer) buys a Winchester Model 1200 with a ribbed field barrel from War Zone Army Navy Surplus. In the surplus, Nancy has a brief altercation with Jason who grabs the barrel and says she shouldn’t buy it because ‘shotguns are not good for much past killing small birds,’ and in close combat, someone would just grab the barrel.

Jason is wrong about his first statement but isn’t completely wrong about close-range combat. Due to this, in “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback’’ she saws off the barrel. It should be noted that this actually makes the shotgun less tactically sound. She is later seen carrying the shotgun into the Upside Down where she shoots Vecna a total of five times in the chest.

 The Makarov PM

In Stranger Things 4 a few of our main characters spend quite a bit of time in a Russian prison. Because of that, we get to see plenty of old foreign guns. A popular one is the Makarov PM used by Dmitri Antonov (played by Tom Wlaschiha) also known as Enzo and Murray Bauman (played by Brett Gelman) in “Chapter Six: The Dive”, “Chapter Seven: The Massacre at Hawkins Lab”, and “Chapter Eight: Papa”

Murray Specifically uses it to hold several Russian soldiers hostage during their search and rescue attempts at the prison. Though it is small, it packs a hefty punch even just to smack the hell out of some guards.

The Nagant M1895

Jim Hopper (played by David Harper) is a fan favorite by far but seemingly dies in season three. However, it’s revealed in season 4 that he is alive and was captured by the Russian military. Long story short, Joyce Byers (played by Winona Ryder) and Murray set on a mission to save him. This mission, however, runs into a false hope of Yuri Ismaylov (played by Nikola Duricko) who ends up betraying them to sell them to the KJB. Yuri arms himself with a Nagant M185 revolver in “Chapter Five: The Nina Project” but through some impressive kung-fu moves, Murray steals it away in an effort to reclaim their freedom.

The AK-47

Just about anytime a Russian soldier is on the screen you’ll see an AK-47. It’s used constantly, and though it has been replaced by the better of its cousins, its presence can be explained by understanding it may have been given to rear-line prison guards since they aren’t a high priority for the newest and most powerful weapon.

The coolest use in the show is when Jim uses it in “Chapter Nine: The Piggyback” to fight off the Demagorgons and Demodogs. However, the final blow to the Demogorgon is made with a sword which is incredibly fitting to the show’s theme of Dungeons and Dragons.

The ROKS-2 Flamethrower

Though the ROKS-2 Flamethrower isn’t a traditional firearm it’s worth an honorable mention. Who doesn’t love flamethrowers? Probably the Demodogs, who were killed by Murray in “Chapter Nine: Piggyback” using it. It was a perfectly timed kill that saved Hopper and Joyce. The ROKS-2 has a history of being used in the Soviet military in World War Two, so it makes sense that it would be laying in Yuri’s stockpile where Hopper originally took it from. With a range of 30-35 meters and a stream length of 5-6 seconds, the ROKS-2 shined through this rescue.
