Taurus TH Series Goes Bigger: TH45 in .45 ACP

You may already be familiar with the Taurus TH series of pistols. It’s a line of hammer-fired compact and full-size handguns described as a “modern reinvention of the classic hammer-fired SA/DA semi-auto platform.” They were previously available in just 9mm and .40 S&W. Now a third option is available: the TH45, chambered in .45 ACP.

I’m not sure why the .40 came out before the .45 (unless they were just counting up), but better late than never. At least as far as lovers of America’s Caliber are concerned.

The Taurus TH series is available in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. Full-size and compact versions can be had, and if the TH45 follows in the footsteps of its THc predecessors, there will be several color options.

Taurus TH45 Pistol

The newest TH-designated handguns are polymer-framed, hammer-fired weapons (not striker) utilizing double-single action (DA/SA). Like its older TH-series cousins, the TH45’s thumb safety/decocker allows you to carry the pistol cocked and locked. The standard magazine capacity is listed as 13 rounds.

In the release, Caleb Giddings (the Taurus brand marketing manager) was quoted as saying, “I can’t think of anything better than launching a 45 ACP the same week as Independence Day.” That’s actually not a bad point. If there is a more American cartridge than the .45 ACP, I’ve never heard of it.

Now, for those who aren’t familiar with double-action/single-action handguns, DA/SA is a term that refers to how the pistol operates vis-a-vis the trigger pull, hammer drop, etc. The first pull of the trigger has a long trigger pull with greater resistance, much like you’d experience with a revolver (or the military’s M9 Beretta, the CZ75, and others). Each shot after that are single action; that first round throws the hammer back, so all it has to do with the next trigger pull is fall forward. Thus the second and subsequent rounds fired are smoother and easier to handle (at least for most shooters).

Note that if the weapon is already cocked, with the hammer pulled back — which is why some carry it “cocked and locked” — that first round will already be single action.
