Meopta Unveils Night Vision Optic – MeoNight 1.1

MeoNight 1.1 NVD

Meopta is a long-time maker of the some of the finest, yet most affordable optics in the world. They strike the balance between ultra-expensive and big-box retail el cheapo. While they’ve made some fantastic reflex and magnified optics in the past, their latest offering is something totally out of the blue – light amplification, AKA Night Vision.

Dubbed, the MeoNight 1.1, this unmagnified night vision device has an effective range of 600 meters. Despite being an unmagnified optic, a 3x booster is available for the MeoNight making is a more useful optic for seeing finer details at further distances.

From the unit’s description, it sounds like Meopta wants the MeoNight to double as both an NVG monocular and weapon sight – almost like the old PVS-14 units, except presumably built for harder use. (Older PVS-14 NV units don’t do well with powerful firearms like shotguns and .308 rifles/carbines)

Still, given the plummeting price of third generation NVDs, this new Meopta is a welcome sight. With an MSRP of $4,499.99 it’s not cheap, but compared to what some of these things were demanding only a few years ago, this isn’t an astronomical price – provided the MeoNight has the performance to justify it.

The Spec sheet on Meopta’s website states that the Image Intensifier Tube’s (IIT) Lux is listed as both 64 and 72 lumens per meter. Which one it actually is, I couldn’t say. But given the unit’s price, I would assume 64 lux.

Whether or not this new scope has the durability and marketability of its competitors it yet to be seen. Either way, the more companies producing night vision devices, the better.
