Updates to Mossberg MVP Patrol Rifle Line

For 2017, Mossberg announced an update to its popular MVP Patrol rifle line. The new guns will feature Vortex Crossfire II 2-7×32 scopes.

The MVP line of rifles made a splash when they were introduced in 2013. These guns are bolt-action rifles that feed from standard AR magazines. Two basic models are offered: one in 5.56 NATO (.223 Rem) and the other in 7.62×51 (.308 Win). The 5.56 model feeds from normal AR-15 magazines while the .30 caliber option runs on SR-25 type magazines. Both versions come with 10-round Magpul PMAG magazines.

The new scopes are part of the Crossfire II line. These are considered by many to be very good optics for the price. I frequently see them recommended by people. Though I’ve never had the chance to test a Crossfire II, I am eager to do so based on their reputations.

A Dead-Hold BDC reticle is used in the scopes on these new rifles. The Crossfire II uses a one-piece tube that is o-ring sealed and nitrogen purged. The scope is said to be both water- and fog-proof.

Since the original Mossberg MVP Patrol rifle was designed for iron sights, these models include a comb raising kit made of neoprene with foam inserts.

The 5.56 rifle has a 16.25″ medium bull barrel with an A2-style muzzle device. It is threaded, so you can remove the A2 and add a suppressor or brake if you wish. The barrel has a 1:9″ twist and matte blue finish. It comes with fiber optic rifle sights that back up the Vortex scope.

The 7.62 version of the gun is similar to the 5.56 rifle. It also has a 16.25″ threaded barrel with a birdcage-style flash suppressor. However, it has a 1:10″ twist, which is better suited to a range of .308 rounds. The overall length of this gun is 1″ longer than the 5.56, and it weighs 0.5 pounds more.
